A bulk upload of the initial large dataset


Often, requirement is such that you have a large amount of data lying in traditional SQL databases or in files and you want to import everything to Neo4j. Often, this takes months, as people mostly use Cypher queries or a one-at-a-time node creation approach, which is not suitable when your nodes/relationships run into millions or higher.

In this recipe, you will learn how to import an initial bulk dataset into Neo4j.

Getting ready

Perform the following steps to get ready for this recipe:

  1. Set up a Neo4j instance using the recipes covered in Chapter 1, Getting Started with Neo4j, of this book.

  2. You need a large dataset, which needs to be imported to Neo4j. For this recipe, we will use http://www.mockaroo.com/, which gives you the ability to generate data of various types—up to 1,000 rows in the free edition and up to 10 million rows in the paid edition.
