Description

Thanks to its reliability, robustness, and high performance, PostgreSQL has become the most advanced open source database on the market. This third edition of Mastering PostgreSQL helps you build dynamic database solutions for enterprise applications using the latest release of PostgreSQL, which enables database analysts to design both physical and technical aspects of system architecture with ease. Starting with an introduction to the newly released features in PostgreSQL 12, this book will help you build efficient and fault-tolerant PostgreSQL applications. You’ll thoroughly examine the advanced features of PostgreSQL, including logical replication, database clusters, performance tuning, monitoring, and user management. You’ll also work with the PostgreSQL optimizer, configure PostgreSQL for high speed, and understand how to move from Oracle to PostgreSQL. As you progress through the chapters, you’ll cover transactions, locking, indexes, and how to optimize queries for improved performance. Additionally, you’ll learn how to manage network security and explore backups and replications while understanding useful PostgreSQL extensions to help you in optimizing the performance of large databases. By the end of this PostgreSQL book, you’ll be able to get the most out of your database by implementing advanced administrative tasks effortlessly.

Who is this book for?

I'm new to Postgres. My back ground is MS SQL Server. This book helped me greatly, to quickly learn and practice Postgres from the beginning. This book has plenty of examples which you can run yourself and see its execution. So I'd highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn Postgres.

This is not an intro book about PostgreSQL or databases in general, but it is a very good book for someone already generally familiar with databases such as MySQL or SQL Server, who can use some in-depth discussion of the PostgreSQL particulars of a spectrum of essential and moderately advanced topics. Inexplicably, Packt has failed to include the Table of Contents in the Amazon preview, so here it is: 1 Basic Overview 2 PostgreSQL 12 Overview 3 Understanding Transactions and Locking 4 Section 2: Advanced Concepts 5 Making Use of Indexes 6 Handling Advanced SQL 7 Log Files and System Statistics 8 Optimizing Queries for Good Performance 9 Writing Stored Procedures 10 Managing PostgreSQL Security 11 Handling Backup and Recovery 12 Making Sense of Backups and Replication 13 Deciding on Useful Extensions 14 Troubleshooting PostgreSQL 15 Migrating to PostgreSQL 16 Assessment 17 Other Books You May EnjoyIn the past I've found some Packt books utterly abysmal, from incomprehensible writing that was seemingly raw from Google translate, to technical information that was badly organized, irrelevant or just plain wrong. This book is very far from that. The narrative is very readable, the topics are covered at a good level of detail, and often anticipate issues that might puzzle you, or tie in related topics that you would likely want to know. "Well done!" to author Schonig, and to those at Packt responsible for facilitating a good quality result. (But maybe get that ToC into the "Look Inside"?)

Average book, no details on PostgreSQL architecture. Mostly DBA info. Ok topics but adding insights into how it achieves ACID is important as fundamental knowledge

Based on the chapter headings, these topics are clearly important to mastering Postgres. However, delving into the content, the results are well short of mastering. There is repeated use of the words, "understanding", "digging into", "making use of", "handling" but again, well short of accomplishment. For example, in Chapter 9: Handling Backup and Recovery, there is little or no description of the requirements, setup, and execution of said backup and recovery; the subsequent chapter "Making sense of Backups..." is no better. There is hinting insofar as what the syntax is and what a replay command looks like, but no detail of the structure/process of the WAL, checkpoints, lsn's and other important information needed to master the topic. Case in point, in the 'Running pg_dump' section, the entire content of that is one page, half of which is consumed by an example of the command and a screen capture of the output of the --help text. It does mention that pg_dump locks the table, so that's useful, but I can get that from the official Postgres documentation. At no point did I consider myself mastering the topic after reading the brief discussions - I only realized I would have to find another source for more information. I gave it 2 stars becuase the author made good examples and determined a decent outline for the topics. However, if the intent is to produce masters after reading, the book will need to be significantly deeper.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published.
