The project tracking activity is a manager's bread and butter, especially during the execution of a project. And Project really shines in this department by providing many tools and features to aid tracking. So many techniques can be overwhelming for a brand-new user of Project, but this doesn't have to be the case. You can stick with the very simplest of techniques for a project or two, and only go to more advanced techniques as and when the situation demands it. This would be the best approach until you get a good grasp of the dynamics of tracking.
