Key benefits

  • Get to grips with effectively using LLVM libraries step-by-step
  • Understand LLVM compiler high-level design and apply the same principles to your own compiler
  • Use compiler-based tools to improve the quality of code in C++ projects

Description

LLVM was built to bridge the gap between compiler textbooks and actual compiler development. It provides a modular codebase and advanced tools which help developers to build compilers easily. This book provides a practical introduction to LLVM, gradually helping you navigate through complex scenarios with ease when it comes to building and working with compilers. You’ll start by configuring, building, and installing LLVM libraries, tools, and external projects. Next, the book will introduce you to LLVM design and how it works in practice during each LLVM compiler stage: frontend, optimizer, and backend. Using a subset of a real programming language as an example, you will then learn how to develop a frontend and generate LLVM IR, hand it over to the optimization pipeline, and generate machine code from it. Later chapters will show you how to extend LLVM with a new pass and how instruction selection in LLVM works. You’ll also focus on Just-in-Time compilation issues and the current state of JIT-compilation support that LLVM provides, before finally going on to understand how to develop a new backend for LLVM. By the end of this LLVM book, you will have gained real-world experience in working with the LLVM compiler development framework with the help of hands-on examples and source code snippets.

Who is this book for?

This book is for compiler developers, enthusiasts, and engineers who are new to LLVM and are interested in learning about the LLVM framework. It is also useful for C++ software engineers looking to use compiler-based tools for code analysis and improvement, as well as casual users of LLVM libraries who want to gain more knowledge of LLVM essentials. Intermediate-level experience with C++ programming is mandatory to understand the concepts covered in this book more effectively.

What you will learn

  • Configure, compile, and install the LLVM framework
  • Understand how the LLVM source is organized
  • Discover what you need to do to use LLVM in your own projects
  • Explore how a compiler is structured, and implement a tiny compiler
  • Generate LLVM IR for common source language constructs
  • Set up an optimization pipeline and tailor it for your own needs
  • Extend LLVM with transformation passes and clang tooling
  • Add new machine instructions and a complete backend

The book provides an end-to-end guide to build a compiler from scratch using the latest version of LLVM. It is a truly beginner friendly book -- readers don't even need to have any previous compiler knowledge to start with. Nevertheless, the content doesn't stop at beginner level: It is not only professional, but also gives you certain level of insights into LLVM. On top of this, I really love the fact that this book is based on the latest version of LLVM and includes lots of exciting new features introduced in the recent years. Which is really impressive because many of the online learning resources about LLVM are outdated or only limited to "essential" features in LLVM. Probably the only downside is that since this book wants to cover broad range of topics, it doesn't really provide an in-depth knowledge for certain part of LLVM, which is not really ideal if you're going to directly hack on LLVM or working closely with upstream (e.g. submitting a patch or even adding new features). In short, it is a good book if you want to build your own programming language from scratch using LLVM.I was supplied a free eBook sample for evaluation.

I love this book. Anyone can start from scratch, follow the book and become really good at using LLVM libraries along with lexer, parser , Semantic Analyzer and Code generation. All CS students should use this and get an idea of compiler development.

This is a practical book with up-to-dated information (the latest version of LLVM).It covers a wide range of content in LLVM, including front-end, middle-end, back-end, Just-In-Time compiler, and debug tools. A tiny hands-on project is provided to help readers quickly go through phases of LLVM.For LLVM beginners, this book is a good starting point for getting into it. Since it’s a book targeted beginners, it doesn’t cover all the information in depth. And I feel it would be much easier for those who have zero experience about LLVM to understand the LLVM concept with more diagrams presented.Overall, it’s a definitely worth-reading book for people who’s interested in LLVM!*I received a sample product for an honest review.

Nacke’s latest book on LLVM 12 is noted as a beginner’s guide to this technology. While it does introduce readers to the LLVM compiler, it is not an introductory book in any other respect. Readers without significant C++ knowledge or experience will likely be lost. That notwithstanding, this is an excellent book. If you are already a compiler developer or want to jump into that fascinating area of software engineering and have C++ experience, then this book is for you.The book is organized well and starting with the second chapter, starts with technical requirements and ends with a brief summary. There are a lot of technical requirements the reader must contend with in order to fully enjoy the book and the author walks the reader through each step and process. The source code is provided as you would expect. “Code in action” videos are provided for chapters 2-12 but do not contain audio. The videos still provide value as you can watch the code in action and benefit from the few on screen text items added.Highlights of this book include depth of coverage, logical organization, information on compiler structures, intermediate code generation, creating your own compiler, debugging, using LLVM tools, and extending LLVM.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access.
