Enterprise Internet of Things Handbook

Applications of IoT

In the last chapter, we defined IoT, looked at its history, and finally went through all the key building blocks of an IoT application. In this chapter, we are going to take a step back and understand the real-world applications of IoT before we start working with the building blocks.

The topics covered in this chapter are:

  • IoT and its value proposition
  • The healthcare domain and IoT
  • The industrial domain and IoT
  • Other IoT application areas

IoT and its value proposition

From the examples we have looked at in the previous chapter, we have seen how IoT helps us achieve a world of connected devices. But is that all there is to IoT? Well, no. The world of connected devices is step zero in the process of human evolution.

In a few years from now, IoT will be as integral as the internet itself.

Having a world of connected devices is all about convenience in terms of the ability to monitor and manage these devices remotely. Next comes the world of smart devices. Smart devices are the next generation of IoT, where the devices not only talk to a centralized entity, such as the cloud, but also talk to each other, keeping you in the loop.

Taking a smart home scenario, take a look at the following WhatsApp group chat for Arvind's Home:

Take a look at another WhatsApp group chat for Super Market X:

The previous two conversations...

Healthcare and IoT

In my humble opinion, IoT, and healthcare are match made in heaven. The value that comes from integrating seamless connectivity and smartness between living beings and their health is priceless.

Things such as postoperative care, elderly monitoring, and remote diabetes monitoring are only a few areas of impact.

Before we proceed further, I would recommend you to watch this video, Scott Hanselman's best demo! IoT, Azure, Machine Learning & more at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5oTz1e5qqE to understand the true power of real-time healthcare.

In 2018, we are defining smart healthcare, but the sad truth is that something as trivial as healthcare and its intelligence component should have been the primary focus from the beginning.

As a side note, if you want to see how these disruptive technologies might turn out from the eyes of Charlie Brooker (http...

Industrial IoT

Industrial IoT or, as it's more popularly known, IIoT, is one of the key impact areas of IoT. With the power of industrial sensors, as well as a world of smart devices, we can achieve and automate a lot more.

The following diagram is from an article by Greg Cline on Industry 4.0 and Industrial IoT in Manufacturing: A Sneak Peek, at http://www.aberdeenessentials.com/opspro-essentials/industry-4-0-industrial-iot-manufacturing-sneak-peek/:

As we can see from the diagram, we are currently in the era of industry 4.0, where, with the power of smart devices, we could change the way a manufacturing process runs.

Take a look the following videos to get a better idea as to what industry 4.0 is all about:

Other applications of IoT

In this chapter, we have dwelled on the world of healthcare and industry. Now, at a high level, let's take a look at other potential areas of impact.

Agriculture

Smart agriculture is all about finding optimal farming methodologies to increase the final yield, as well as to preserve natural resources. This is more beneficial to commercial farmers than anybody else.

Crops that yield cotton, cocoa, sugar, oranges, and so on would have a greater impact on the ability of smart and controlled farming.

Greenhouses can also benefit from the technologies of smart farming.

Here is an overview of this domain:

Summary

In this chapter, we have gone through various domains where IoT can add value. We have specifically dwelled on the healthcare and industry domains. Next, we looked at other possible domains that could be impacted by IoT.

In the next few chapters, we are going to look at various IoT platforms that can bring the previous visions to reality.

Key benefits

  • • Work with various trending IoT platforms such as AWS IoT, Azure IoT, Google IoT, IBM Watson IoT, and Kaa IoT
  • • Gain hands-on knowledge working with Cloud-based IoT platforms, IoT Analytics, and so on.
  • • A practical guide that will help you build IoT strategies for your organization

Description

There is a lot of work that is being done in the IoT domain and according to Forbes the global IoT market will grow from $157B in 2016 to $457B by 2020. This is an amazing market both in terms technology advancement as well as money. In this book, we will be covering five popular IoT platforms, namely, AWS IoT, Microsoft Azure IoT, Google IoT Core, IBM Watson IoT, and Kaa IoT middleware. You are going to build solutions that will use a Raspberry Pi 3, a DHT11 Temperature and humidity sensor, and a dashboard to visualize the sensor data in real-time. Furthermore, you will also explore various components of each of the platforms that are needed to achieve the desired solution. Besides building solutions, you will look at how Machine Learning and IoT go hand in hand and later design a simple predictive web service based on this concept. By the end of this book, you will be in a position to implement an IoT strategy best-fit for your organization

Who is this book for?

This book is targeted at IoT architects and engineers, or any stakeholders working with IoT solutions in an organization. This book will also help decision makers and professionals from small- and medium-sized enterprises build an IoT strategy for their venture.

What you will learn

  • • Connect a Temperature and Humidity sensor and see how these two can be managed from various platforms
  • • Explore the core components of AWS IoT such as AWS Kinesis and AWS IoTRules Engine
  • • Build a simple analysis dashboard using Azure IoT and Power BI
  • • Understand the fundamentals of Google IoT and use Google core APIs to build your own dashboard
  • • Get started and work with the IBM Watson IoT platform
  • • Integrate Cassandra and Zeppelin with Kaa IoT dashboard
  • • Review some Machine Learning and AI and get to know more about their implementation in the IoT domain.

This book has helped by taking me to steps necessary to make IoT projects work. The initial chapters have many links supporting details and that was good enough for me since I have basic knowledge of IoT but struggle to make things work. There are lots of step-by-step information in this book makes it easy & fun to learn. I am Visual Studio programmer and wanted to learn the IoT with NodeJS. I already own RaspberryPI and able to easily modify the NodeJS script to read the three DS18B20 temperature sensors (1-wire Temperature Sensor with the "DS18B20 NodeJS" library. It took me less than two days to get up and running with the help of this book!
