Generating a QR code in a frame

QR codes are effectively a type of barcode that can be scanned by most modern mobile devices and can convey a variety of useful information. The most common use of QR codes is to provide a quick way of linking to online information, with users being able to point their mobile phone at a QR code on a poster, flyer, or sign, and a website will be opened up on the user’s device.

Despite QR codes being easy to generate in InDesign, I still come across many users that are unaware of this feature and are using third-party apps and online resources to create their QR codes instead. In this recipe, we will look at how to create a QR code, the different types of QR codes available, and even how to customize the color of your QR code. In the next chapter, we will then look at placing external content such as images into your frames.
