NIST Control

When Kali Purple was developed, initially as a proof of concept (which rapidly evolved into a total framework and platform), the developers based it on five basic cyber defense stages: Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover. These five stages themselves were developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In February of 2024, NIST added a sixth stage, Govern, to the framework.

NIST is actually an agency within the US Department of Commerce and was founded way back in the year 1901 when most technology was likely to be manifested within the factory industry. The great irony of NIST creating a cyber framework is that it was originally established as a physical science laboratory. However, it has expanded its area of coverage over the years and its purpose as it relates to cybersecurity is to establish best practices to improve the security and resilience of information systems as well as the protection of sensitive data.
