In this chapter, we will focus our attention on the TCP/IP suite. It was created and implemented by the Department of Defense (DoD), so in case of a calamitous event, our data and communications would be intact. I will cover protocols that use TCP/IP and, throughout this book, you will learn how to design solid, dependable, and secure networks using Cisco routers and switches.
We will begin by looking at the DoD's version of the TCP/IP model; there are two of them, and we will compare them both to the OSI model in how the layers map over to each other.
One very exciting topic we will also start covering in this chapter is the wonderful world of IPv4 addressing. We will cover the following topics:
- The TCP/IP model
- The host-to-host layer/transport layer
- The Internet layer
- Address types of IPv4
