Understanding Remote Access (2.3)

The Remote Access role in Windows Server 2016 enables remote access to resources inside an organization's network. To understand it better; remote access consists of a logical grouping of the following network access technologies:

  • DirectAccess: Introduced in Windows Server 2008 R2 and uses IPsec to encrypt communication between the DirectAccess client and the DirectAccess server. It encapsulates IPv6 traffic over IPv4 to reach the intranet from the internet. Access to a corporate intranet is enabled without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
  • Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS): The successor to the Remote Access Service (RAS) in Windows NT, it was introduced in Windows 2000 and represents a combined service that establishes links between remote locations via VPN and dial-up, as well as traffic paths between the sub-networks.
