Mastering Articulate Storyline

Chapter 2.  Refresher of Key Concepts

Now you may already be familiar with the basic development functions of Articulate Storyline, but just to make sure we've covered the basics, this chapter will provide you with a refresher of the key concepts.

These key concepts will allow you to prepare your story for bigger and maybe even better things. Once you understand the primary functions of Storyline, you will easily be able to apply more complex functions across your e-learning project to make Storyline bend to your will!

The purpose of this book is to get you comfortable with pushing Articulate Storyline to its limits. Doing this may also broaden your imagination, allowing you, in turn, to push your creativity to its limits.

There are so many things you can do within Storyline, and a lot of those features, interactions, and functions are often overlooked because they just aren't used all that often or a client project doesn't require them. Often, the basic functionality...

Preparing a story

By now, you probably know how to prepare a new story, but you need to be aware of your options. As someone who tends to start from the ground up with my development, New Project is usually the selection I make. However, depending on how you prefer to author e-learning, it might be easier to import from a previously built project or template. This comes in handy if you prefer authoring in PowerPoint or if someone else is developing the branding guidelines and/or templates for your project. The point is that you have options, and they are as follows:

  • New Project: Create your story by starting afresh, with a blank canvas
  • Record Screen: Record screen content to integrate into a new story
  • Import: This option allows you to import content previously developed in the following softwares:
    • Microsoft PowerPoint
    • Articulate Quizmaker
    • Articulate Engage
    • Articulate Storyline
    • You are also able to import questions from text files or Microsoft Excel

Another helpful option you may want to consider...

Adding content to your story

Content is essential to any story because without it, there would be no story. In this section, you will become reacquainted with all of the basic content features Storyline has to offer, and these features will be expanded upon in later chapters.

Scenes and slides

Your first order of business before you can add content to your story is to begin by adding scenes and/or slides.

Scenes are basically containers that hold a group of slides. As previously mentioned, ahead of development, you may find it easiest to consider the content you plan on authoring.

Slides are where your content is housed. You will use slides to house the content that users will navigate through. With slides, you are able to define layouts, create the content, and set the content up as you would like it displayed in the final Storyline file. Slides in Storyline work the same as slides in Microsoft PowerPoint, so if you're familiar with Microsoft PowerPoint, you already have the skills you...

Adding interactivity and extending slide content

Interactive learning is a pedagogical approach that tends to emphasize interactivity as a means of engaging learners instead of having them passively absorb information. Instead of sitting on a desk and listening to an instructor drone on, filling the brain (the bank) with knowledge, learners are encouraged to engage with the course content by using interactive elements to discover or reinforce their knowledge.

Loosely, interactivity in e-learning may be viewed as anything that requires the learners to interact with components within a lesson, module, or course. Storyline provides a wealth of options when it comes to adding interactivity to your stories, such as buttons, markers, motion path animations, and sliders, just to name a few.

Extending slide content is just as it sounds–extending the content on the main slide, without having to use multiple slides to convey the same information. In Storyline, you have many options for easily...

Adding visual media

Adding visual media can help captivate your audience, appeals to visual learners, and can help make monotonous content more engaging. In Storyline, visual media includes images, characters, videos, embedding web objects, or adding screen recordings.

If you choose to visually appeal to your audience, Storyline has got you covered!

Here, we'll briefly discus adding images and characters, and then we'll dive into the deeper trenches of adding video and screen recordings in Chapter 3 , Creating a Content-Rich Story.

To add images, simply click on the Picture icon on the Insert tab. You can then browse for the desired image. Once added, you are able to format your image using the Format tab or by right-clicking and selecting Format Picture.... When you do this, the Format Picture menu will appear and you can modify the image to your liking. If you achieved an undesirable effect when formatting your image, from the Format Picture menu, you can select Reset Picture...

Adding audio

Incorporating audio into your story will appeal to auditory learners, enhance accessibility (when used in combination with textual elements), and add some personality and realism to otherwise lifeless content.

Storyline allows you to easily import, record, and edit audio files. We'll go into further detail about using audio in Storyline in Chapter 3 , Creating a Content-Rich Story. So, for now, we'll just jog your memory in relation to how easily you can add audio files to your project.

To insert audio, you will select Audio from the Insert tab, and you will have two options:

  • Audio from File...
  • Record Mic...

Adding audio

To add audio from a file, select Audio from the Insert tab and then select Audio from File.... You can then browse for the desired audio file and select Open.

To record audio, select Audio from the Insert tab and then select Record Mic.... You will then be presented with the Record Microphone menu, where you can record, playback, rewind, and delete recorded audio...

Ashley Chiasson has done a fantastic job with this book. so much until I just ordered her first essentials book. The writing and instructions are clear, to the point and easy for any user to start using the program. Ashley knows her stuff and I am so happy that I have the opportunity to use her wisdom to create my own products. Very Well Done!!

As a guide to Articulate it is not bad, however I bought this for use with Kindle Cloud .... NEVER AGAIN ... slow to lod, does not link in the images correctly, but pushes you to a separate PDF document ... no ability to print that I can see, so for me a waste ...

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
