Delphi High Performance

Fixing the Algorithm

In the previous chapter, we explored the concept of performance and looked at different scenarios where we would like to make the program faster. The previous chapter was largely theoretical, but now is the time to look at it in a more practical way.

There are two main approaches to speeding up a program:

  • Replace the algorithm with a better one.
  • Fine-tune the code so that it runs faster.

I spent lots of time in the previous chapter discussing the time complexity simply to make it clear that a difference between two algorithms can result in impressive speed-up. It can be much more than a simple constant factor (such as a 10-times speed-up). If we go from an algorithm with bad time complexity (say, O(n2)) to an algorithm with a better behavior (O(n log n), for example), then the difference in speed becomes more and more noticeable when we increase...

Responsive user interfaces

A user's first contact with any program is always the user interface. A good UI can make or break a program. Leaving the user interface design aside (as I am not qualified to speak about that), I will focus on just one fact.

Users hate user interfaces that are not responsive.

In other words, every good user interface must react quickly to a user's input, be that a keyboard, mouse, touchpad, or anything else.

What are the tasks that can make a user interface unresponsive? Basically, they all fall into one of two categories:

  1. A program is running a slow piece of code. While it is running, the UI is not responding.
  2. Updating the user interface itself takes a long time.

The problems from the first category fall into two subsets—functions that have non-blocking (asynchronous) alternative and functions that don't.

Sometimes we can...

Caching

Our good friend Mr. Smith has improved his programming skills considerably. Currently, he is learning about recursive functions and he programmed his first recursive piece of code. He wrote a simple seven-liner which calculates the nth element in the Fibonacci sequence:

function TfrmFibonacci.FibonacciRecursive(element: int64): int64;
begin
if element < 3 then
Result := 1
else
Result := FibonacciRecursive(element - 1) +
FibonacciRecursive(element - 2);
end;

I will not argue with him—if you look up the definition of a Fibonacci sequence it really looks like it could be perfectly solved with a recursive function.

A sequence of Fibonacci numbers, F, is defined with two simple rules:

  • First two numbers in the sequence are both 1 (F1 = 1, F2 = 1),

  • Every other number in the sequence is the sum of the preceding two (Fn = Fn-1 + Fn-2).

You will...

Speeding up SlowCode

For the last practical example, we can try speeding up Mr. Smith's SlowCode from Chapter 1, About Performance. Here, we immediately ran into a problem. To fix or change an algorithm we must understand what the code does. This happens a lot in practice, especially when you inherit some code. Reading and understanding code that you didn't write is an important skill.

Let's try to understand the first part of SlowCode. The for loop in SlowMethod starts counting with 2. Then it calls ElementInDataDivides, which does nothing as the data list is empty. Next, SlowMethod adds 2 to the list.

Next, i takes the value of 3. ElementInDataDivides checks if 3 is divisible by 2. It is not, so SlowMethod adds 3 to the list.

In the next step, i = 4, it is divisible by 2, and 4 is not added to the list. 5 is then added to the list (it is not divisible...

Summary

In this chapter, I touched on two very different topics. First, I looked at responsive user interfaces and how to make them faster and then I continued with the concept of caching. That topic was introduced with a simple example, followed by a fully featured cache implementation that you can use in your programs.

At the end, I returned to the example SlowCode program from Chapter 1, About Performance. First, I used some detective work to find out what it really does, which allowed me to improve it a lot. The code now processes a million numbers in mere milliseconds and not minutes as the original program did.

In the next chapter, I'll focus on optimizing the code on a smaller level. We will look at various Delphi language and RTL elements and you'll learn which parts of the language and system libraries can behave slower than one would expect and what...

Key benefits

  • Build efficient and concurrent applications in Delphi with focused examples
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and apply the correct algorithm to increase the performance of applications.
  • Delve into parallel programming and memory management to optimize your code

Description

Delphi is a cross-platform Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that supports rapid application development for Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X, Google Android, iOS, and now Linux with RAD Studio 10.2. This book will be your guide to build efficient high performance applications with Delphi. The book begins by explaining how to find performance bottlenecks and apply the correct algorithm to fix them. It will teach you how to improve your algorithms before taking you through parallel programming. You’ll then explore various tools to build highly concurrent applications. After that, you’ll delve into improving the performance of your code and master cross-platform RTL improvements. Finally, we’ll go through memory management with Delphi and you’ll see how to leverage several external libraries to write better performing programs. By the end of the book, you’ll have the knowledge to create high performance applications with Delphi.

Who is this book for?

This book is for Delphi developers who would like to build high performance applications with Delphi. Prior knowledge of Delphi is assumed.

What you will learn

  • Find performance bottlenecks and easily mitigate them
  • Discover different approaches to fix algorithms
  • Understand parallel programming and work with various tools included with Delphi
  • Master the RTL for code optimization
  • Explore memory managers and their implementation
  • Leverage external libraries to write better performing programs

I have been using Delphi since 1995 and pride myself as knowing a lot of what goes on "under the hood". But this book was a sobering serving of humble pie. Great narrative, excellent and concise examples, and lots of real-life testing data to back-up the assertions of the text. This book will join the barely dated "Delphi XE2 Foundations" (Rollinson) as a permanent fixture on my desk (where, believe me, space is at a premium).

I am completely in AWE of Primoz new book "Delphi High Performance". After reading only 4 chapters i have already produced two tickets for two different 3rd party vendors and the bugs are already fixed. Most literature in lieu leaves me with a "well, i knew that". But this book is really an eye-opener to me.You get walked-through all those things that are a bit murky. Important and interesting details regarding the subject matter explained with humour, exactness and detail. Also - and i appreciate this a lot - the authors personal views on some particular details is accounted for. This is not a beginners book, put it in the hands of someone without hands-on experience and they will probably go do a LOT of premature optimization.

A new Delphi book is a rare thing these days, and this is a good one. I'm always tweaking my code to optimise performance, so this was right up my alley.While it covers a lot of things I already knew, there was also plenty I didn't know (and I've been using delphi since v1) or had forgotten. The book goes into just the right amount of detail, with excellent examples.Should be required reading for all Delphi developers!

Primož is the ideal author to write this book, and he assembled the kind of resource we all need to read.I appreciate that it talks both about responsiveness and computation performance. It is also refreshing to see a book that is written with attention paid to the latest technology, while also being applicable to earlier versions of Delphi.I've been programming Delphi since the beginning, and Turbo Pascal before that, and just flipping through this book I learned useful information.
