Building Web Apps with Spring 5 and Angular

Preparing the Spring Web Development Environment

In this chapter, we will go into the details of setting up the development environment for working with Spring web applications. The following are the key areas that we will look into:

  • Installing the Java SDK
  • Installing/configuring Maven
  • Installing the Eclipse IDE
  • Installing/configuring the Apache Tomcat server
  • Installing/configuring the MySQL database
  • Introducing Docker containers
  • Setting up the development environment using Docker Compose

Installing the Java SDK

First and foremost, we will install Java SDK. We will work with Java 8 throughout this book. Go ahead and access this page (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html). Download the appropriate JDK kit. For Windows/Linux, there are two different versions--one for x86 and another for x64. One should select the appropriate version, and download the appropriate installable file. Once downloaded, double-click on the executable file for Windows, or unTAR and install appropriately for Linux. The instructions for installing Java on Linux can be found on this page (https://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/technotes/guides/install/linux_jdk.html).

The following instructions help one install Java on Windows OS. Double-clicking on the EXE file would start the installer. Once installed, the following needs to be done:

  1. Set ...

Installing/configuring Maven

Maven is a tool which can be used for building and managing Java-based projects. The following are some of the key benefits of using Maven as a build tool:

  • It provides a simple project setup that follows best practices--it gets a new project or module started in seconds.
  • It allows a project to build using its Project Object Model (POM) and a set of plugins that are shared by all projects, providing a uniform build system. POM is defined in an XML file, namely, pom.xml, which defines the project configuration and dependencies along with their versions. One can manage the dependencies version from pom.xml.
  • Based on the project templates (also called archtype), Maven supports scaffolding, based on which the standard folder structure is created along with the base controller files, unit tests, and so on.
  • It allows usage of the large and growing repository...

Installing the Eclipse IDE

In this section, we will set up the Eclipse IDE, a tool used by Java developers to create Java EE and web applications. Go to the Eclipse website at http://www.eclipse.org, and download the latest version of Eclipse and install it. As we shall be working with web applications, select the option Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers while downloading the IDE.

As you launch the IDE, it will ask you to select a folder for the workspace. Select the appropriate path, and start the IDE.

The following are some of the different types of projects that developers could work on using IDE:

  • A new Java EE web project.
  • A new JavaScript project. This option will be very useful when you work with a standalone JavaScript project, and plan to integrate with the server components using APIs.
  • Check out the existing Eclipse projects from Git, and work on them.
  • Import one...

Installing/configuring the Apache Tomcat server

One can skip this section when working with a Spring Boot project. This is because starting a Spring boot application, using public static void main as an entry point, launches an embedded web server and, thus, one would not require starting a server such as Tomcat.

In this section, we will learn about some of the following:

  • How to install and configure the Apache Tomcat server
  • Common deployment approaches with the Tomcat server
  • How to add the Tomcat server in Eclipse

The Apache Tomcat software is an open-source implementation of the Java servlet, JavaServer Pages (JSPs), Java Expression Language, and Java WebSocket technologies. We will work with Apache Tomcat 8.x version in this book. We will look at both, the Windows and Unix version of Java. One can go to http://tomcat.apache.org/ and download the appropriate...

Installing/configuring the MySQL database

In this section, you will learn how to install the MySQL database. Go to the MySQL Downloads site (https://www.mysql.com/downloads/), and click on Community (GPL) Downloads under the MySQL community edition. On the next page, you will see a listing of several MySQL software packages. Download the following:

  • MySQL Community Server
  • MySQL Connector for Java development (Connector/J)

Installing/configuring the MySQL server

In this section, we will explain how to download, install, and configure the MySQL database and a related utility, MySQL Workbench. Note that MySQL Workbench is a unified visual tool which can be used by database architects, developers, and DBA for...

Description

Spring is the most popular application development framework being adopted by millions of developers around the world to create high performing, easily testable, reusable code. Its lightweight nature and extensibility helps you write robust and highly-scalable server-side web applications. Coupled with the power and efficiency of Angular, creating web applications has never been easier. If you want build end-to-end modern web application using Spring and Angular, then this book is for you. The book directly heads to show you how to create the backend with Spring, showing you how to configure the Spring MVC and handle Web requests. It will take you through the key aspects such as building REST API endpoints, using Hibernate, working with Junit 5 etc. Once you have secured and tested the backend, we will go ahead and start working on the front end with Angular. You will learn about fundamentals of Angular and Typescript and create an SPA using components, routing etc. Finally, you will see how to integrate both the applications with REST protocol and deploy the application using tools such as Jenkins and Docker.

Who is this book for?

This book is targeted towards Java Web Developers with a basic knowledge of Spring who want to build complete web applications in a fast and effective way. They will want to gain a stronghold on both frontend and backend development to advance in their careers.

This book would be very useful to anyone wanting to learn how to build web applications. The author has decades of experience building applications that would clearly show in how the material is presented. Can't wait for the next edition on this subject or for the author to explore and write about other development frameworks.

I had to modify the POM. (Change Spring 2.x to 1.x and add JUnit 5) to make the Spring app work. So cutting one star. I think the "tour of heroes" on Angular 2 is helpful before this book. Otherwise a good book on the full stack application development with the latest technologies.

Waste of money. None of the concepts were explained in detail and the examples are very vague with no proper instructions on how to follow.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon
