The Assess Phase

As was covered in the previous chapter, the Assess phase forms the backbone for any and all migration as well as modernization activities that an organization undertakes. With database migrations, the Assess phase helps the organization analyze database workloads and their various interdependencies, schemas, or custom code, and subsequently plan for the right migration strategy to accompany it. To assist with the process, AWS provides a simplified workload qualification tool called the AWS Workload Qualification Framework (WQF). WQF is specifically designed to evaluate a database workload and its interdependencies and helps categorize the workload into one of the five categories shown in Table 18.1. These five categories later form the basis for which the right database migration strategy can be planned.
