Choosing the right capacity mode

Choosing the right capacity mode involves evaluating your specific requirements and considering factors such as expected traffic patterns, workload predictability, and cost considerations. By carefully assessing these factors, you can make an informed decision to determine whether provisioned capacity mode or on-demand capacity mode aligns better with your workload’s needs.

Use provisioned mode when the workload has the following characteristics:

  • Is steady and more or less predictable (could be cyclical)
  • Has gradual ramp-ups and -downs
  • Is driven by known and controllable events
  • Can be monitored on an ongoing basis (for forecasting)
  • Sees limited short-term bursts of traffic

Use on-demand mode when the workload shows the following behavior:

  • Is highly unpredictable
  • Has frequently idle periods of no traffic
  • Is driven by unknown and uncontrollable events
  • Need to “set it and forget it”...
