Summary


Tcl has a powerful extension for communicating over SNMP. The Scotty package covers all aspects of SNMP—all commonly used versions of the protocol and offers all aspects of SNMP communication.

In this chapter, we learned:

  • TkIned application—this can be used as both a simple network monitoring tool and base for learning SNMP.

  • Using Scotty for getting and setting SNMP values, for iterating over SNMP tables and finding attributes that a particular device offers. This can be used to, periodically or on demand, query data from devices or automatically configure devices.

  • How to send and receive traps—this is especially useful if we need to support devices that communicate only over SNMP, such as routers, printers, and embedded devices. We can also send traps from our application, which can be used to notify our monitoring system if something is wrong.

  • To set up SNMP agent so that our application can be monitored and/or queried using SNMP. This can be an integration point with monitoring systems...
