Gotchas

Just as with the preceding tips and tricks, there can be some traps and gotchas to be on the lookout for that can potentially introduce tremendous difficulty into the architecture process. As with the tips and tricks, these aren't the only things that could go wrong. However, these mistakes are ones where many architects struggle, and ones where it can take even seasoned architects years to internalize. Likewise, these items represent issues that can arise that aren't directly tied to a particular step along the design path (since we tried to outline those traps as we went through the design iteration phases). There are many things that can go wrong, but these are the items that we've learned the hard way are best avoided.

To keep it simple, we are focusing on five here:

  • Be aware of (but don't play) politics.
  • Don't shirk the preparation.
  • Stay engaged until the end.
  • Leave ego at the door.
  • Use a multidisciplinary approach.
