Microsoft Exchange 2013 Cookbook

Chapter 2. Installing Exchange Server 2013

In this chapter, we will cover:

  • Preparing Active Directory

  • Installing Exchange 2013 prerequisites

  • Installing Exchange using the Setup wizard

  • Installing Exchange from the command line

  • Verifying an Exchange 2013 installation

  • Introducing the Exchange Admin Center

  • Uninstalling an Exchange 2013 Server or Server role

Introduction

This chapter is dedicated to describing and walking you through the installation process of Exchange 2013. Like any other program, ensuring the health and successful operation starts with a solid foundation. As explained in Chapter 1, Planning an Exchange Server 2013 Infrastructure, planning your deployment is crucial. Correctly executing the installation steps is at least equally important. Failure to fulfill the prerequisites or correctly install Exchange 2013 might lead to a lot of problems further down the road.

The recipes that are described in this chapter will lead you through the different steps required to introduce Exchange 2013 in your environment. This can be an upgrade from an existing Exchange organization or an installation in an entirely new environment where no Exchange has been installed before. We'll start by preparing your Active Directory inventory and end with showing how you could modify or remove an Exchange server from your environment.

Preparing the Active Directory

As described in Chapter 1, Planning an Exchange Server 2013 Infrastructure, important updates to your Active Directory environment are required in order to be able to install Exchange 2013.

In short, the following two steps need to be completed:

  1. Extend the Active Directory Schema.

  2. Configure Exchange-specific groups and permissions.

We start by showing you how to perform these steps, followed by giving you some additional explanations on how to verify the Schema update ran fine for example.

Getting ready

Before continuing with the following steps outlined, you should understand what the impact extending your schema has on your organization.

To execute the following steps, you need to have the appropriate permissions. Depending on which command you run, this includes membership of:

  • Schema Admins

  • Enterprise Admins

  • Additionally, you should make sure that your Active Directory is healthy and replication is working flawlessly.

Installing Exchange 2013 prerequisites

Getting ready

The following steps assume you have already installed and configured the operating system and drivers. If you have additional software that you need to install, for example, company-specific management tools, this would be a good moment to make sure they have been installed as well.

How to do it…

Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (or higher)

You have to make sure all required Windows Server roles and features are correctly installed. Although it is still possible doing this from the GUI, doing it through PowerShell might save you some time. These are the steps you need to follow to do it through PowerShell:

  • Open an elevated Windows PowerShell instance. Open the Start Menu, right click on PowerShell and select Run as Administrator

  • Load the Server Manager PowerShell Module by running the following command:

        Import-Module ServerManager

Depending on whether you are installing a Mailbox Server, a client Access Server, or a multi-role server...

Installing Exchange 2013 using the Setup Wizard

In this topic, we will walk you through the necessary steps that are required to install your first Exchange Server 2013, by using the Setup Wizard.

How to do it…

The following are the steps necessary for installation:

  1. Logon to the Exchange Server machine with an account that has the necessary permissions to install Exchange (see Chapter 1, Planning an Exchange Server 2013 Infrastructure planning and designing for the required administrative permissions).

  2. From the installation media, launch setup.exe.

  3. On the first window appearing, make your choice about whether you want to connect to the internet and download the latest available files for doing the setup, or use the version from the installation medium. Depending on your specific situation, you might choose one or the other. Our recommendation is to install the version from the installation media first, making sure all Exchange Servers are running from the same installation media.

  4. Click on next...

Installing Exchange 2013 from the command line

In this recipe we will walk you through the same installation as the Setup Wizard, only this time we are using the command line. Although the Setup Wizard is perfect if you have to do only a few Exchange installations, the command line offers you the ability to quickly set up more servers, even opening up the ability to script the Exchange installation.

A good example of how the command line can be used is the Exchange 2013 Unattended Installation Script by Michael de Rooij (www.eightwone.com). It's a handy script that we use all the time to quickly build test machines.

To find out more, have a look at the TechNet Gallery available at http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Exchange-2013-Unattended-e97ccda4.

How to do it…

  1. Log on to the Exchange Server machine with an account that has the necessary admin rights for Exchange Server installation. (See Chapter 1, Planning an Exchange Server 2013 Infrastructure on what administrative rights are required...

Verifying the Exchange 2013 installation

Although the Exchange Server 2013 setup shouldn't be that difficult when all prerequisites are fulfilled, somewhere along the track, something might go wrong or cause an error. Therefore, it is good to know where to look for help, or at least verify whether the installation ran fine or not.

How to do it…

After the installation is completed, you should have two Exchange Server 2013 icons in your Windows Server 2008 R2 Start Menu (or two Exchange Server 2013 tiles in your Windows Server 2012 Start Screen):

Having the icons/tiles available is not a 100 percent bullet-proof test of the installation cycle. Therefore, we use the following additional checks:

Get-ExchangeServer

By using the Get-ExchangeServer PowerShell cmdlet, you will get an overview of all your Exchange Server 2013 machines in the organization. By default, this is a summarized view, which can be turned into a detailed view by piping the command to a format list.

The summarized or default view...

Introducing the Exchange Admin Center

While we will dive into all aspects of the EAC during the next chapters of this cookbook, this recipe is to get you connected to it so you can start learning how to navigate the EAC and find your way around.

As already mentioned in the introduction of Exchange 2013, this new management tool is totally different from the management console in previous versions.

Getting ready

In order to login to the EAC, you will need an account with administrative permissions. For example, an account that is member of the Organization Management role group. If this is the first server you are installing and Exchange wasn't installed in your organization previously, the account you used to install Exchange will automatically have been granted the Organization Management permissions.

How to do it…

Starting the Exchange Admin Center is done by connecting to the following URLs from within your browser:

https://internalexchangeserverFQDN/ecp

In addition, the following URL can...

Uninstalling an Exchange 2013 Server or Server role

Although this chapter focusses on installing Exchange Server 2013, we thought it would be of interest explaining how to uninstall a Server or Server Role.

Getting ready

In order to remove Exchange from a server, you need to be a member of the Organization Management role group and either have been delegated permissions on the server or have local Administrator rights.

How to do it…

Somewhere along your Exchange administration timeline, you will probably need to uninstall a server role from an existing multi-role machine. One might think this isn't a difficult task—and to be honest it shouldn't be—but uninstalling a server role from an Exchange Server 2013 is actually not possible. The only option is to completely uninstall Exchange and then only to reinstall the role you want to keep.

Similar to the installation process, uninstalling is possible through the setup wizard or by using the command line. Both examples are explained in this section...

The books is well structured, starting off with planning and designing your Exchange 2013 deployment on to installing the product. It then turns to configuring the individual Client Access Server and Mailbox Server role specifics, like certificates or Database Availability Groups. Next up is configuring external access which is described vendor neutral. Special attention is then paid to individual features like High Availability, backup/recovery, compliance and security. The book ends with Van Hoorenbeeck’s favorite subject, hybrid deployments. That chapter is unfortunately a bit short, but I’m inclined to think this is intentional and may be because an Office 365 book with information on this subject may be in the works from PacktPub.Read the rest of the review here: [...]

Ok if you want to read many prerequistes and planning concerns. In fact you could take month researching all if the nuances. It is written from the perspective of someone that is very experienced and warns you of all that could possibly go wrong and focuses little on helping you get something done. Skips many details instead gives you links to blogs for further era search.Be a good book for a student. Not practical in my view.Getting another book hoping it will focus on guiding the reader to accomplishing a deployment.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
