In-place and legal holds can be thought of as an extension of content search, where you'll be querying for specific content across multiple locations but then placing a hold on the results to preserve them for a period of time, whether indefinitely or with a set end date. These holds are usually due to protecting an organization in possible litigation scenarios in which failure to retain data relevant to a case might result in financial or legal risks to the organization.
In-place holds can be granular, using keywords or conditions to find specific content. Litigation holds can only be applied to all items. When configuring a hold, you'll want to know or consider the following:
