Developing the data lineage


Data lineages are diagrams or information which trace information through the system. This gives you the big picture of the information flow within the business intelligence and data warehouse project.

Getting ready

Gather the blueprint information and information obtained during the development of different matrices' recipes for this chapter.

How to do it...

Creating a data lineage creates a visual flow of the information as it is understood by the project team. This provides the basis for the development of mappings to extract and load the data warehouse as follows:

  1. 1. Open your data lineage spreadsheet and create an additional tab called Data Lineage, as shown in the following screenshot:

  2. 2. On the left-hand side, enter your Business Entities:

  3. 3. Outline the different stages the data will travel through in the business intelligence and data warehouse project before it gets published to the business users:
