Creating a 3D character with Autodesk Character Generator

In the last recipe, we used a character downloaded from the Unity Asset Store. While it is possible to create and rig a 3D character from scratch using tools like Blender, many hours (perhaps hundreds of hours) are needed to become proficient in a 3D modeling tool to get high-quality results. Another way to create 3D models is to use an application that offers many templates and customizable properties. In this recipe, we’ll use the Autodesk Character Generator web application to create a ready-for-Unity, rigged 3D character model.

Getting ready

You’ll need an Autodesk account and access to the Character Generator web application – this is free for many students through Autodesk’s Education Community program at https://www.autodesk.com/education/edu-software
