Over the last few years, hundreds of frameworks and methodologies have evolved under the loose banner of self-management. Unlike Agile, which has a manifesto, self-management is an amorphous cluster. Drawing a difference between Agile and self-management would be a challenging exercise and would push us into a theoretical debate of little use.
So, for the time being, let's just say that there is a large group of methodologies that allow those closest to the work to make decisions – they aim to enable everyone to act as a thinker.
First, we will look into the most famous of the self-management methodologies: Sociocracy, Holacracy, and Teal. Then, we will cover Nonviolent Communication – not quite self-management, but a powerful framework to guide the individual transformation necessary for these new ways of working.
