Planning your transition to boards
As a CIO or CISO, a new way of thinking is required for board work. You must understand how these roles are subtly different from what you have been doing and make an adjustment. What is valued in a CIO or CISO will remain the same, but as a board member, you must operate at a higher strategic level. Here are a few things you should do:
- Develop your plan at least a year out from considering retirement: It would be advisable to start to shift your mindset through non-executive board training and completion of the certification process. There are various institutions around the world that provide this training and I’d highly recommend this path.
- Evaluate your value proposition as a board member: What do you bring that is valuable? Boards will often want to leverage recent management experience from people who have dealt with challenges such are remote work during COVID, how to manage generative AI, and so on.
