The Technical Program Manager (TPM) role is one of the most misunderstood roles in the tech industry, despite it being pivotal for running a successful software development program. I have been in this field for 10 years and have found that every company defines the role in a different way, as the author notes in this book. This book is such a wonderful reference for TPMs because it recognizes this lack of clarity in the field and also defines the role while maintaining a realistic understanding that the reader will encounter different expectations depending on the company. In this vein, the book goes into details of how an individual can run a successful program. The book provides guidance on defining the role, running effective projects and programs, and helpful tools. This is general enough that the reader can adapt it to their own role, but a specific example program is used throughout the book to give the reader more explicit instructions.A great book for new TPMs and seasoned ones hoping to drive role standardization in their company.

I thought this was a GREAT read!!! Thank you to the author for writing this. Someone needed to do it.This book came at the perfect time as I only recently landed my first TPM role after being a project manager in tech for the last few years. I wasn’t able to find any book specifically relating to technical program management and how to become a more well rounded TPM. This handbook has really equipped me with the tools and knowledge as I delve into my new role and now I have a better idea of what I need to focus on in order to reach the next level in my career. I can always refer back to this book as a reference point whenever I need to.The author keeps things simple and the content is easy to understand. The kindle version was awesome because I was able to share practical notes to myself and save the other books that were recommended for more deeper dives into certain subject matter and I was able to click certain links that would bring me back to a chapter that I wanted to review again.I would highly recommend reading this book for anyone who is interested in technical program management or for anyone who works in this domain. I would say that this book may be geared more towards people like myself who are at the earlier stages of their careers as a TPM but I would also say that even the more Sr TPM’s will still find it valuable and will still learn something new.

This book’s title aptly describes its content, and it delivers. One of the best parts of this book is that it breaks down the difference between projects and programs. These are so often lumped together, but they have unique considerations that deserve separate treatment. Managing stakeholders is another prized chapter and it walks through a sample status report. One of the overarching themes, and appropriately so, is clarity. Two areas that could have been covered in greater detail are managing a geographically dispersed workforce (to include offshore), and the shift to work-from home. Otherwise, this is a great book and worth the read for newly promoted IT managers and directors as well as those that aspire to those positions.

I’ve worked on project management for over 5 years and currency working in Amazon as a technical program manager. I’ve only read one program management book before this one, and this book is relatively easy to read but extremely practical and useful. The author provides different tools and template you can use on even the most complex and challenging projects, but also offers suggestions and examples that are both strategically and tactically practical. What I like most about the book is it really focuses on how to become a TPM in the tech domain, and even has one dedicated chapter on Code Development and System design. You will not get that level of detail on any other PM handbooks.
