SolarWinds Orion Network Performance Monitor

Chapter 2. Orion NPM Configuration

In the previous chapter, we walked through an entire Orion NPM installation including the configuration of your Windows Server, the installation and configuration of Microsoft SQL Server, and the Windows Firewall settings. This chapter builds upon the previous one and will cover the initial Orion NPM configuration for a first-time installation scenario. In it, we will discuss the following:

  • Orion Configuration Wizard

  • Orion Website Administration

  • User account permissions

  • Setting thresholds

  • Orion NPM licensing

  • Upgrading Orion NPM from an evaluation license

  • An overview of the Orion dashboard

Orion Configuration Wizard

The Orion Configuration Wizard handles configuring every single aspect of the Orion NPM product, including the Windows Server itself. Since our Windows Server and SQL Server instance is in order, it is time to launch the Orion Configuration Wizard.

After launching the Orion NPM Configuration Wizard for the first time, a licensing screen appears asking you to click on one of three different buttons. I usually recommend holding off on activating the software until the last possible moment. I do this just in case there is a problem with an installation, if I need to refund a purchase, or if I need to purchase more licensing. But above all, I wait so that I can verify that all settings and configurations are in order.

Note

Perform the following steps while logged into the Windows Server with the same SQL Server service account described when installing SQL server in the previous chapter. Ensure the service account has administrative permissions to the Windows Server where...

Orion Website Administration

The Orion Website Administration page is where an Orion administrator not only completes the initial configuration of a new Orion NPM installation, but also returns to continually in order to manage Orion NPM. It can be accessed at any time from any web page in the Orion website by clicking on the Settings link in the upper-right corner of the screen.

All of the core configuration options for the entire Orion NPM installation are located in the Orion Website Administration console. The admin console allows you to perform the following actions:

  • Add nodes and interfaces to Orion NPM either manually or by network discovery

  • Manage nodes, groups, and dependencies

  • Edit web page views and module views

  • Manage Microsoft and VMware credentials

  • Configure Orion dashboard settings, polling settings, and thresholds

  • Manage user account permissions

  • Manage Windows credentials for monitoring Windows-based computers

  • Edit the look and feel of the tabs, menu bars, web pages, and modules in...

Orion NPM licensing

Orion NPM has a flexible licensing model and is licensed by the highest number of the following elements:

  • Nodes

  • Interfaces

  • Volumes

An interface element is some type of primary point of contact with the network. Switch ports, Serial Ports, VLANs, Port Channels, and both physical and virtual network interface cards (NICs) are all classified as interfaces.

A node is a physical or virtual network device that can be managed. Switches, routers, physical servers, virtual servers, virtual server hosts (VMware, Xen, and so on), firewalls, wireless access points, wireless controllers, and other types of physical network devices are all classified as node elements in Orion NPM. For example, one wireless access point monitored by SNMP would be classified as a node. A Windows Server monitored by WMI would be a node as well. In general, a node element has more than just an interface or volume. A node may have a fan, CPU, memory, power supplies, and other resources. In general, if a network...

Overview of the dashboard

Now that you are logged in, you can start working with Orion NPM through the web console or the Orion dashboard. The dashboard is where users will perform most of the duties as an Orion administrator. It operates by using a hierarchical tabbed-based interface. There are three primary tabs at the top of the Orion dashboard; HOME, NETWORK, and VIRTUALIZATION. Every one of these primary tabs has a bar that displays different web page links. Every page has their own set of modules that shows the specific aspects of that area. For example, the SUMMARY page in the HOME tab displays the overview of the monitored network.

Note

SolarWinds refers to the Orion dashboard as both "the dashboard" and "the web console". These terms are used interchangeably.

One of the best features of Orion NPM is that virtually every single tab, page, and module in the dashboard can be manipulated, edited, changed, or moved from one page to another if an Orion administrator wishes to do so. In addition...

Summary

In this chapter, we finished our initial configurations of our Orion NPM system. We saw an overview of the entire Orion dashboard, as well as an overview of the Orion Website Administration console. We also took a deep dive in user authentication with individual accounts and Microsoft Active Directory, we looked at how to configure thresholds, and we discussed Orion NPM licensing.

Now that our initial configuration is complete, let's move on and learn how to add devices to Orion NPM so we can start monitoring them!

I was given a review copy of this book in digital form.I am very much enjoying this manual. It is easy to read, has more explanation for the various configurations and how the modules work within the entire Solarwinds Orion system!I like the Solarwinds documentation, instruction videos, and their Thwack support - all that is given free to support us all.I hope they still keep supporting like this! But I do find Joe Dissmeyer's book another excellent source of information! We have a large Solarwinds system (NPM, SAM, NCM, 3 pollers - soon to have 4, LEM, UDT, FSM, etc.). Joe, I hope you will publish another one soon on Solarwinds - perhaps a delving a little more on SAM templates with Linux - being more creative with monitoring mount points. And possibly more on NCM.Just a last note - I love your section on monitoring VMware hosts! Great explantions. I enjoyed reading and following along with our system. Thanks Joe!

I was given this book by packet publishing and over the past 2 weeks compared the material to what I encounter on a daily basis using Solarwinds NPM, NCM, and SAM modules. I thought the book gave a lot of general over all good information. I thought the format and topics covered where good. I would've preferred a little more in depth on the configuring of nodes or using MiB walkers and creating custom pollers. Overall for someone just starting out with solarwinds, this would be a valuable resource.

I'll note up front that I didn't purchase a copy of the book myself. I received a copy of the e-book from Packt Publishing and I appreciate them giving me an opportunity to review the book and provide my feedback.I've been administrating SolarWinds Servers for the last 5 years and I was very excited when I learned that someone had written a book about SolarWinds Orion because I agree with the author that the vendor documentation at times is not as useful as it should be but over the years I've seen dramatic improvements made.At the company I work for, we are using SolarWinds Orion with the SAM module and SolarWinds Enterprise Operations Console. I ran the product through our test lab and wrote the standardized build documents we use for installing and configuring an Orion, EOC and SQL server. As part of training new administrators, I have them read the install and administrator guides for each product, and while they cover 80% of the issues my administrators and I run into on a daily basis, they don't cover the issues that you find yourself dealing with in day to day operations. I was hoping that the author covered many of the things that I ran into and still do to some degree even now. Things like:- How to enable SNMP on Solaris and other types of devices (i.e. F5 Load balancers and Environmental control units). Perhaps this could be added as an appendix?- A simple terms explanation of the function of the various Orion services contained within the Orion Service Manager and how they interact with each other.- Why Orion does NetBIOS lookups in addition to DNS on the nodes and how and when to turn it off.- An overview of the various logs that Orion generates, their location and the information they contain.- How and when to access Hubble for in-depth real-time diagnostics.- How to SSL enable your website (included in the Admin guide) and use PKI tokens for authentication- An explanation of the SNMPv3 credential requirements and how to enable SNMPv3 on routers & switches.I had high expectations before I read the book which were not fulfilled, however, I think this book is great for Admins that have a hard time understanding SolarWinds official documentation but at the current price point I can't recommend it over the official documentation. In my opinion, for the book to be an essential guide for installing, implementing and calibrating SolarWinds Orion NPM it needs to include explanations of the areas where the official documentation is lacking in easy to understand terms. Having said that, I look forward to future revisions of the book and will update my review accordingly.
