CI
CI is a software development practice that allows software developers and software development teams to check their code into a shared repository, automatically building and running tests on both existing code and code changes. This helps ensure that changes do not introduce new issues. Ideally, the tests in the CI system will run and if they all pass, the software will be ready to be deployed.
CI and the pipeline
When discussing CI, the concept of a pipeline is helpful to visualize the steps. Think of a pipeline in the literal sense. You might have to connect a variety of pipes in a plumbing fixture to get water to go where it needs to. The pipeline in a CI context is when we stage and string together a variety of scripts and processes to move along between the steps necessary to get from code check-in to delivery of software to a destination platform(s).
