We'll begin by diving into the role that the steering committee plays in sponsoring change.

What exactly does the steering committee do? I often see projects where people believe that the role of the steering committee is to gather once a month to listen to long project updates presented in endless PowerPoint presentations. In this situation, the role of the steering committee is very passive. For change to be successful though, the role of the steering committee should be highly active.

The base of the word "steering" is "steer." Think about what you do when you steer a car. You decide where the car will go. You decide the best route to get there. You fill the car with gas so that it is able to keep moving. You are responsible for the other passengers in the car with you. These are the same activities that the steering committee is responsible for in your project.
