NativeScript for Angular Mobile Development

Feature Modules

We are going to continue building the foundation of our app by scaffolding the core feature modules our app will need, the player and recorder. We will also want to keep in mind that the recording features will only be loaded and available when a user authenticates. Lastly, we will finish the implementation of our services from the CoreModule we created in Chapter 1Get Into Shape with @NgModule.

In this chapter, we will be covering the following topics:

  • Creating feature modules
  • Separation of concerns with app features
  • Setting up the AppModule to bootstrap efficiently, only loading upfront the feature modules we need for our first view
  • Using the NativeScript application-settings module as our key/value store
  • Providing the ability to control our app's debug logs at one spot
  • Creating a new service that will use...

Player and recorder modules

Let's create the shell of our two main feature modules. Take note that we also add NativeScriptModule to the imports of both of the following modules:

  1. PlayerModule: It will provide player-specific services and components that will be usable whether the user is authenticated or not.

Let's create app/modules/player/player.module.ts:

// nativescript
import { NativeScriptModule } from 'nativescript-angular/nativescript.module';
// angular
import { NgModule, NO_ERRORS_SCHEMA } from '@angular/core';

@NgModule({
imports: [ NativeScriptModule ]
schemas: [ NO_ERRORS_SCHEMA ]
})
export class PlayerModule { }
  1. RecorderModule: This will provide recording-specific services and components that will only be loaded if the user is authenticated and enters the record mode for the first time.

Let's create ...

Summary

Throughout, we have been working hard creating a solid foundation to build our app on. We created a CoreModule to provide some low-level services, such as logging, and a persistent store and designed the module to easily scale in more services as needed . Plus, this module is portable and can be dropped into other projects with your own company's special sauce intact.

In typical app development, you may want to run your app on the iOS and/or Android simulator along the way, during this process to double-check some of your design/architecture choices and that would be advisable! We just haven't done that yet, since we have an app pre-planned here and want you to stay focused on the choices we are making and why.

We also created the two primary feature modules that our app needs for its core competency, PlayerModule and RecorderModule....

Key benefits

  • Power packed hands-on guide to help you become pro-efficient with NativeScript
  • Harness the power of your web development skills with JavaScript and Angular to build cross-platform mobile apps
  • Create highly maintainable and feature-rich apps with TypeScript and NativeScript APIs

Description

NativeScript is an open source framework that is built by Progress in order to build truly native mobile apps with TypeScript, JavaScript or just Angular which is an open source framework built by Google that offers declarative templates, dependency injection, and fully featured modules to build rich applications. Angular’s versatile view handling architecture allows your views to be rendered as highly performant UI components native to iOS and Android mobile platforms. This decoupling of the view rendering layer in Angular combined with the power of native APIs with NativeScript have together created the powerful and exciting technology stack of NativeScript for Angular. This book focuses on the key concepts that you will need to know to build a NativeScript for Angular mobile app for iOS and Android. We’ll build a fun multitrack recording studio app, touching on powerful key concepts from both technologies that you may need to know when you start building an app of your own. The structure of the book takes the reader from a void to a deployed app on both the App Store and Google Play, serving as a reference guide and valuable tips/tricks handbook. By the end of this book, you’ll know majority of key concepts needed to build a successful NativeScript for Angular app.

Who is this book for?

This book assumes you have a general understanding of TypeScript, have heard of NativeScript and know what it's about, and are familiar with Angular (2.0). You don't need to be an expert in any of these technologies, but having some sense of them before reading is recommended this book, which is ideal for intermediate to advanced users.

The book ensures that you start thinking about organizing your app in a very modularized fashion. I'd honestly have preferred if it started with defining component a basic component layout and then iterating over it by adding the extra modules, services, etc instead of the other way around, but it's alright. If you don't know any Angular or Typescript, do yourself a favor and go learn that stuff before coming to this book as it assumes you have a working knowledge of those technologies.

Maybe I don't know enough about Angular but this book was VERY COMPLICATED to follow. There are pages and pages of code pieces that create different components of a well structured application, but I didn't think there was enough time spent explaining the samples. I downloaded the code from the publishers site thinking that it would help but it would not run. This book seems very new so I hope that it gets better over time. It could be very useful but it didn't work for me right now :(

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
