ICANN-accredited Registrars are contractually obligated to send you certain emails to comply with various policies under the terms of their contracts with ICANN. Some of these emails you can safely ignore, while others you can't. However, all of them are, from time-to-time, spoofed-in phishing attempts by nefarious third parties to attack you, and we'll examine that in the Common pitfalls section.
It used to be relatively rare that ICANN policies could cause domain names to be suspended by their Registrar or even deregistered (such as an Invalid Whois Data complaint).
Then, alas, a new policy came out, and now it's not so rare at all. This relatively new ICANN policy causes many domains to be suspended at inopportune times for flimsy reasons, and it causes a lot of damage and mayhem.
