Getting Started with Microsoft System Center Operations Manager

Chapter 2. Installing System Center Operations Manager

Building on the knowledge gained in Chapter 1, Introduction to System Center Operations Manager, you should now have an understanding of the core components of Operations Manager (OpsMgr) and its minimum installation requirements. In this chapter, we will walk you through designing and then deploying a new OpsMgr environment.

The following topics will be covered in this chapter:

  • Designing an Operations Manager environment
  • Creating service accounts
  • Configuring prerequisites
  • Installing Management servers
  • Installing the Reporting Server
  • Deploying the Web console
  • Installing a Gateway server

Designing the environment

Before you dive in and begin installing OpsMgr, its best practice to take a step back and think about how you will design the environment. A good design takes into account the overall monitoring requirements of the business, the physical and logical locations of the infrastructure to be monitored and any existing monitoring applications that are currently in place.

Involving members of each business unit/department in the organization is paramount to delivering a monitoring solution that works for everybody and can deliver real benefits and time-saving back to the business.

Here's some advice to get you started with your initial OpsMgr designs:

  • Don't run before you can walk: A full enterprise deployment of OpsMgr can be very complex and could span across many geographical locations monitoring thousands of computers and network devices. For this reason, it's recommended to start small and approach your design in different phases. Postpone deployment...

Creating the service accounts

When you've decided on the design that best suits your needs, you can begin preparing the environment for the installation of OpsMgr. The first thing to do is to understand the service accounts that will be used and then go ahead and create them in the Active Directory environment.

The following table details the four accounts requested during installation and also gives a suggested name for each.

Account

Description

Management server action account

opsmgr_action

  • Used for collecting data from providers and running responses on monitored computers across the network.
  • This account should be configured as a standard domain user account in Active Directory.
  • Should not be granted domain administrative privileges.

System Center Configuration service and System Center Data Access service account

opsmgr_sdk

  • Used to update and read information in the Operational database
  • Can be configured as either Local System or as a domain account.

Tips for deploying SQL

Before you can install OpsMgr, you need to deploy a SQL environment to host the databases. A full installation of SQL is relatively straight-forward and you can refer to http://tinyurl.com/sqlinstall for a step-by-step walkthrough of SQL 2014 (the steps in this link are also applicable for SQL 2012 R2 and SQL 2016).

There are however, a few pointers that you need to take into account when deploying SQL with OpsMgr and this section will help you avoid some of the common pitfalls that people encounter.

SQL features and collation setting

During the installation of SQL, you will be asked to choose the features that you want installed into your new instance. A database requirement of OpsMgr is that the Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search feature shown in Figure 2.5 is selected and this is something that a lot of people miss when deploying OpsMgr for the first time.

Configuring the prerequisites

With SQL deployed and optimized, it's now time to install the prerequisite software that must be in place prior to deploying OpsMgr. Both the Management server and the reporting server roles don't have any special software requirements to consider apart from the initial operating system and version of SQL that they're installed on.

If you are installing the Operations console or Web console however, then here's what you need to have in place for each:

Operations console prerequisites

The Operations console has a dependency on the Microsoft Report Viewer 2012 Runtime package and you can download it from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35747.

As the Report Viewer 2012 Runtime package has in itself a dependency on the Microsoft System CLR Types for SQL Server 2012, this then becomes an indirect dependency for the Operations console too. You can download the System CLR Types for SQL Server 2012 as part of the SQL Server...

Installing your first Management server

Now you're ready to install your first OpsMgr Management server and at this point, you should have decided on the type of OpsMgr design that you wish to deploy along with having the service accounts, SQL and prerequisite software all in place.

If you haven't done so already, you can download a fully functional 180-day evaluation version of the OpsMgr software from here: http://tinyurl.com/sysctreval. This evaluation can be easily upgraded to a licensed version with a valid license key that can be obtained when you purchase System Center for your organization.

Introducing our example organization

For the purpose of this book, we have created a fictional organization called Nimbus Corporation who is running an Active Directory domain named NimbusCorp.com.

They have a need to use OpsMgr to monitor an IT infrastructure made up of a mix of Microsoft Windows and UNIX/Linux computers spread across multiple domains and DMZ's. There's a number...

Key benefits

  • Discover how to monitor complex IT environments with System Center Operations Manager using tips, tricks and best practice recommendations from industry experts.
  • Learn how to create eye-catching dashboards and reports to help deliver a tangible return on investment back to your organization.
  • Optimize, troubleshoot and perform disaster recovery in Operations Manager using step by step examples based on real-world scenarios.

Description

Most modern IT environments comprise a heterogeneous mixture of servers, network devices, virtual hypervisors, storage solutions, cross-platform operating systems and applications. All this complexity brings a requirement to deliver a centralized monitoring and reporting solution that can help IT administrators quickly identify where the problems are and how best to resolve them. Using System Center Operations Manager (OpsMgr), administrators get a full monitoring overview of the IT services they have responsibility for across the organization - along with some useful management capabilities to help them remediate any issues they've been alerted to. This book begins with an introduction to OpsMgr and its core concepts and then walks you through designing and deploying the various roles. After a chapter on exploring the consoles, you will learn how to deploy agents, work with management packs, configure network monitoring and model your IT services using distributed applications. There’s a chapter dedicated to alert tuning and another that demonstrates how to visualize your IT using dashboards. The final chapters in the book discuss how to create alert subscriptions, manage reports, backup and recover OpsMgr, perform maintenance and troubleshoot common problems.

Who is this book for?

The target audience for this book is the IT Pro or System Administrator who wants to deploy and use System Center Operations Manager but has no previous knowledge of the product. As a ‘Getting Started’ book, our primary objective is to equip you with the knowledge you need to feel comfortable when working with common monitoring scenarios in OpsMgr. With this in mind, deep-diving into less-common OpsMgr features such as Audit Collection Services (ACS), Agentless Exception Monitoring (AEM) and Application Performance Monitoring (APM) has been intentionally omitted.

What you will learn

  • Install a new System Center 2016 Operations Manager Management Group
  • Design and provision custom views to relevant support teams.
  • Understand how to deploy agents
  • Work with management packs
  • Monitor network devices
  • Model your IT services with distributed applications
  • Create dashboards and custom visualizations
  • Tune, optimize, maintain and troubleshoot System Center Operations Manager
