Each previous ConfigMgr version had its own method of being deployed when using packages. Starting from ConfigMgr 2012, there is a new mode, applications, which is the deployment of applications based on application installation files, such as .msi.
This chapter focuses on this second mode, and thanks to it, the administrator can significantly ease daily deployment administration. However, it won't be possible to leave out packages mode completely.
The packages mode is made mainly for running installations of Windows systems. It is not always possible to run an installation using the .msi file. A lot of applications use .exe, .bat scripts, or PowerShell scripts to get installed. In these cases, there is a need to use the packages mode instead of applications.
