Reacting to events – alarms

The team return from their break, with Alex quite excited to know more about alarms.

Alex: I know an alarm is a self-explanatory word, which I can relate to my morning wake-up alarm, but can you explain to me what alarms are in the AWS context?

Raj: Sure. Let me try. When you set a wake-up alarm on your clock, you set a time for it; as soon as the clock reaches that time, an action is taken. In this case, a sound will be played. Similarly, alarms in Amazon CloudWatch can trigger an action based on the breach of the metrics threshold you have defined. In your alarm clock, the threshold is the time that you have selected. In Amazon CloudWatch, you can select a metric to monitor and define a high or low threshold, and if the metrics fall outside of the defined levels, any action that you have defined as part of the alarm will be executed.
