Understanding the response from a REST API

Before we get started with building our application, let's quickly see how a RESTful web service works.

For this exercise, we will use the web service from the following link:

developer.rottentomatoes.com

You will need to create an API key to be able to use these services. So, go ahead, sign up, and register for an API key.

Feel free to go through the documentation to understand the different web services they provide and different types of parameters you need to pass.

We'll use the Box Office API to get the list of the latest box office movies. The URL for the API is as follows:

http://api.rottentomatoes.com/api/public/v1.0/lists/movies/box_office.json

To this, we need to pass the following additional parameters:

  • apikey: The API key that you received when you signed up and registered an application

  • limit: The maximum number of results you want the web service to return

  • country: The country code for the country you'd like to see the results for
