WSO2 Developers' Guide

Developing Integration Projects with WSO2EI Tooling

In the last chapter, we kept up-to-date with Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), the original problem that gave birth to SOA, and the benefits of SOA. Additionally, we learned how to build our SOA infrastructure using WSO2 products, and, more concretely, using WSO2 EI 6.0.0.

In this chapter, we will introduce WSO2 Enterprise Integrator Tooling. This is an Eclipse-based IDE and we will use it to develop our services, as well as to build the deployable artifacts. The topics we will cover are as follows:

  • Installing and running WSO2EI Tooling
  • Creating carbon projects
  • Debugging applications
  • Data mappings

WSO2EI Tooling is a single tool used to develop our entire application, including artifacts from any of the components that comprise WSO2EI.

WSO2EI Tooling is based on Eclipse IDE for Java developers, also called Mars 2.

We can...

Installing and running WSO2EI Tooling

In order to install and run the WSO2ESB Tooling, let's look at the following steps:

  1. The first step is to download the tooling from the WSO2 product site at: http://wso2.com/integration:
  1. We just have to choose the full distribution that matches our operating system and it will start to download.
  2. Once the download is complete, we will have a ZIP file containing the prepackaged WSO2EI Tooling in Eclipse Mars 2. We just have to unzip this file in the desired folder ($WSO2EITOOL) and then we will have Eclipse WSO2EI Tooling ready to be launched as a regular one. For Mac users, you can download a .dmg file. For specific installation instructions and known issues, refer to the official documentation at http://wso2.com/integration.
We are working with version 4.1.0, which is the most recent version at the time of writing this book.
  1. The...

Creating carbon projects

When we develop a WSO2 Enterprise Integrator application, we can create different types of projects depending on the functionality required. These projects are called carbon projects, and there are several kinds of projects depending on the functionality needed.

As you may remember from Chapter 1, Getting Started with SOA and WSO2, WSO2 Enterprise Integrator is a bundle made up of previous individual products. Hence, we will have to create different kinds of projects depending on the built-in product in which we are implementing each part of our application functionality. Thus, we have different projects for the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), Data Services Server (DSS), or Business Process Server (BPS) built-in components.

Focusing on the scope of the book, we will make use of the following:

  • ESBConfig Project: This project contains all artifacts related...

Debugging mediation

With debugging mediation, we will be able to debug our service code as we usually do with our Java applications, for instance. In this case, this feature allows us to check how the message is being changed after every step that happens inside our service. Thus, we can see how an operation performed by a mediator modifies the message.

To enable debugging mediation, you have to follow these steps:

  1. In the WSO2EI Tooling top menu, click on Run | Debug Configurations.
  2. Double-click on ESB Mediation Debugger, and a new configuration window will show.
  3. We keep the default values, except for the following:
    • Name: A name for the configuration; for instance, WSO2EIDebugging
    • Serverhost: The host in which we will perform the debugging; in this case, localhost

Note that we do not click on Debug yet, we remain in this screen. We have to wait for a special event during...

Key benefits

  • ? Design, create, and publish services in the WSO2 technology
  • ? Integrate the WSO2 Enterprise Integrator with other components and servers
  • • Log and test deployed services

Description

WSO2 Enterprise Integrator brings together the most powerful servers provided by the WSO2 company for your SOA infrastructure. As an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), WSO2 Enterprise Integrator provides greater flexibility and agility to meet growing enterprise demands, whereas, as a Data Services Server (DSS), it provides an easy-to-use platform for integrating data stores, creating composite views across different data sources, and hosting data services. Using real-world scenarios, this book helps you build a solid foundation in developing enterprise applications with powerful data integration capabilities using the WSO2 servers. The book gets you started by brushing up your knowledge about SOA architecture and how it can be implemented through WSO2. It will help build your expertise with the core concepts of ESB such as building proxies, sequences, endpoints, and how to work with these in WSO2. Going further, you will also get well-acquainted with DSS data service concepts such as configuring data services, tasks, events, testing, and much more. The book will also cover API management techniques. Along with ESB and DSS, you will also learn about business process servers, the rules server and other components that together provide the control and robustness your enterprise applications will need. With practical use cases, the book covers typical daily scenarios you will come across while using these servers to give you hands-on experience.
