Dependent picklists is a mechanism that is applied to picklist fields whereby the values available in the picklist are controlled by the value that has been selected in another picklist field. The picklist field that is used to determine the available selections for other picklist fields as well as for multi-select picklist fields is referred to as the controlling field.
Any picklist field or checkbox field within the same record can serve as the controlling field for dependent picklists. Multi-select picklist fields can be configured as dependent picklists, but, they cannot serve as controlling fields.
