Determining your current needs and future needs


ITAM is the proactive process of tracking and analyzing the technical and financial information of an organization's hardware and software. This process spans the life cycle of hardware and software assets from the moment the asset is requisitioned through its procurement, receipt, deployment, maintenance, and retirement.

To understand your current ITAM or SAM situation, and determine cost‐effective best practice processes and automated ITAM/SAM systems that help you meet the goals of reduced waste, improved profitability, and achieving software license compliance and audit readiness (as we covered in Chapter 2, ITAM Strategy and Plan), you will need to do the following:
