Understanding the CONNECT storage engine
The CONNECT storage engine has been designed for accessing data from external sources using MariaDB. This engine is not designed for OLTP, that is, you should not use it as the main engine for storing the data in your application. In fact, the data are never stored in MariaDB. The CONNECT storage engine should be used for Business Intelligence tasks such as creating data from the different sources available in one place.
Usually, the BI tasks are done through an ETL, then the data are computed, and specific tools are used for the reporting. Thanks to the CONNECT storage engine, standard tables can be used to access external data from MariaDB.
In other words, the CONNECT storage engine allows you to query external data by using the SQL language.
On some distributions, the library for the engine is not packaged directly with MariaDB. For example, for Debian and Ubuntu, you need to install the mariadb-connect-engine-10.0
package.
