Mapping with ArcGIS Pro

Getting Started in ArcGIS Pro

An important part of any map creation is good data organization. This begins with good file management and continues with managing layers in your workspace. As we noted in Chapter 1How Maps Get Made, good file naming and organizational practices are critical to streamlining your mapping process. If you are working on your computer's hard drive, you may wish to set up a folder dedicated to your ArcPro projects (for example, C:\ArcProProjects). If you are working in an organizational server environment, create a folder according to your organization's file management policies.

ArcPro allows you to organize your project through the Contents pane, the Map View, and the Layout View. The Contents pane allows you to list your data layers in a variety of ways by drawing order, data source, and more. The Map View, like the&...

Opening a project

Let's open an existing project and take a look at the ArcPro interface. When you first launch the application, you'll be asked to sign in with your ArcGIS Online account (if you don't want to sign in each time, check Sign me in automatically).

If you will be working without an internet connection, you can check out a license for up to 30 days from the licensing settings.

On the opening screen, select Open another project. From the folder where you installed the sample data, select GettingStarted:

Figure 2.1: The ArcGIS Pro startup window

Once your project opens, it may look familiar to you if you use Microsoft Office. This is not accidental, but part of a collaboration between Esri and Microsoft. Across the top, you'll find the ribbon and tabs (ProjectMap, Insert, Analysis, View, Edit, Imagery, and Share) in one or more panes. The...

Creating a map output

Now that we've fixed the overlap problem, it's time to add the remaining map elements and finish our map. Regardless of whether you are designing for print or screen, a good map contains a title, north arrow, scale bar, and credits, which include the author name, date, source, and projection information. We'll also add a neatline to give a finished look to our map.

First, let's add a neatline to the layout. Neatlines are also sometimes referred to as borders, and are used to frame objects in a map layout for style or clarity. Too many neatlines can result in clutter, so for now, we'll just create a neatline around the entire map layout:

  1. Click Insert|Rectangle.
  2. Click and drag a box around the map near the margins. If you added guides beyond, you will see it snap to those if you stay close to them. The guides are always on top, so they may obscure some of your neatlines. To verify what's underneath, right-click outside the virtual page and uncheck guides. Repeat and check...

Summary

In this chapter, we gained familiarity with the ArcGIS Pro interface, including working with panes and the ribbon. We worked with data layers in the Contents pane, adding, organizing, and renaming them, and learned how to change the basic symbolization for a layer. We then learned to represent some features differently and add copies of existing layers to enhance the look of the map. We spent some time in the Map View, then switched to the Layout View to work with map frames and prepare a final output for print or screen.

In the next chapter, we'll take an in-depth look at the overall framework of maps, learning the principles of design and layout that improve the map's communication and make maps irresistible.

Transitioning to the Layout View

When you create a map for printing or digital publication, you work in the Layout View. Now that we've got our individual maps symbolized and ready to go, it's time to assemble a layout:

  1. Click Insert|New Layout to add a layout to your project. Select letter-size paper from the ANSI Landscape category as your size and orientation. You now have a virtual page, a page that allows you to organize all the map elements before printing.
  2. To add a map to your layout, click the Map Frame button on the ribbon. From the drop-down menu, select the Default map under US Counties. This will give you a full-page frame of your Counties map.
  3. Click the Map Frame button again to add the North America map. This time, select the North America Bookmark you made to add a quarter-page frame (since we'll be reducing this anyway, it's easier to start...

Key benefits

  • - Build visually stunning and useful maps;
  • - Understand the cartographic workflows and the decisions you must take before creating the map;
  • - Learn to create appropriate map elements and layout designs
  • -Use the ArcGIS Online's Smart Mapping technique to create clear webmaps

Description

ArcGIS Pro is a geographic information system for working with maps and geographic information. This book will help you create visually stunning maps that increase the legibility of the stories being mapped and introduce visual and design concepts into a traditionally scientific, data-driven process. The book begins by outlining the steps of gathering data from authoritative sources and lays out the workflow of creating a great map. Once the plan is in place you will learn how to organize the Contents Pane in ArcGIS Pro and identify the steps involved in streamlining the production process. Then you will learn Cartographic Design techniques using ArcGIS Pro's feature set to organize the page structure and create a custom set of color swatches. You will be then exposed to the techniques required to ensure your data is clear and legible no matter the size or scale of your map. The later chapters will help you understand the various projection systems, trade-offs between them, and the proper applications of them to make sure your maps are accurate and visually appealing. Finally, you will be introduced to the ArcGIS Online ecosystem and how ArcGIS Pro can utilize it within the application. You will learn Smart Mapping, a new feature of ArcGIS Online that will help you to make maps that are visually stunning and useful. By the end of this book, you will feel more confident in making appropriate cartographic decisions.

Who is this book for?

If you are a GIS analyst or a Map designer who would like to create and design a map with ArcGIS Pro then this book is for you. A basic GIS knowledge is assumed.

El libro es muy básico, además, está en blanco y negro, algo poco recomendable para un libro de cartografía. Desde luego, no lo recomendaría.

This book is pretty bad. If you plan on actually trying to complete some of the exercises, good luck. Data is missing and the directions are terrible. Thanks for putting out a book for Pro but you really missed the mark. I love the chapter on color (the ENTIRE book is in grayscale).

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
