In this section, we will focus primarily on the digital transformation of the semiconductor industry. The semiconductor industry permeates all aspects of society and accounted for over $400 billion in sales in 2019 (https://www.statista.com/statistics/266973/global-semiconductor-sales-since-1988/). The industry is responsible for driving remarkable miniaturization in electronic circuits, such that today's smartphones have more computational power than the original desktop computer and are about 100,000 times more powerful than the guidance computer that helped man land on the moon. In order to pursue this drive for integrating more and more functionality on a single piece of silicon, the industry must transform how it manufactures.
