Hands-On Spring Security 5 for Reactive Applications

Deep Diving into Spring Security

This is a hands-on book, but our first chapter was theoretical (as it should be) because it was an introductory chapter.

In this chapter, we will dive deeply into the technical capabilities of Spring Security, specifically authentication and authorization, using code. However, before we get into the coding, we will give a brief explanation of the theory. We are doing this because it is important to understand the concepts before diving into coding.

The two most important aspects of security are as follows:

  • Find the identity of the user
  • Find what resources this user has access to

authentication is the mechanism by which you find out who a user is, and authorization is the mechanism that allows an application to find out what the user can do with the application:

Figure 01: Fundamental aspects of security—Authentication and...

Authentication

One of the fundamental ways to secure a resource is to make sure that the caller is who they claim to be. This process of checking credentials and making sure that they are genuine is called authentication.

The following diagram shows the fundamental process Spring Security uses to address this core security requirement. The figure is generic and can be used to explain all the various authentication methods that the framework supports:

Figure 02: Authentication architecture

As detailed in Chapter 1Overview of Spring 5 and Spring Security 5 (in the Working of Spring Security section), Spring Security has a series of servlet filters (a filter chain). When a request reaches the server, it is intercepted by this series of filters (Step 1 in the preceding diagram).

In the reactive world (with the new Spring WebFlux web application framework), filters are ...

Sample application

Let's gets our hands dirty by doing some coding. We will start off with the most common authentication mechanisms and then get into other authentication mechanisms that can be used with Spring Security.

Base project setup

Apart from the actual authentication mechanism, many aspects of the application are quite similar. In this section, we will set up the example and then cover the specific authentication mechanism in detail.

We will be using the default Spring Security DB schema against which we will authenticate the user. We will create a fully fledged Spring MVC web application, with each component being created from scratch. Creating a sample Spring Security application using Spring MVC with the...

Authorization

Once the user is validated in terms of who they claim to be, the next aspect, what the user has access to, needs to be ascertained. This process of making sure what the user is allowed to do within the application is called authorization.

In line with authentication architecture, as seen earlier, authorization also has a manager, AccessDecisionManager. Spring Security has three built-in implementations for this: AffirmativeBased, ConsensusBased, and UnanimousBasedAccessDecisionManager works by delegating to a chain of AccessDecisionVoter. Authorization-related Spring Security classes/interfaces are shown in the following diagram:

Figure 12: Spring Security Authorization classes/interfaces

In Spring Security, authorization to a secured resource is granted by invoking voters and then tallying the votes received. The three built-in implementations...

Other Spring Security capabilities

Spring Security has a number of capabilities apart from core security features, authentication and authorization. Some of the most important ones are listed here. In Chapter 7Spring Security Add-Ons, we will go through each of these in more detail using hands-on coding. We will build on the example that we have created in this chapter and explain each of these very important Spring Security capabilities:

  • Remember-me authentication: This is also known as persistent-login, and it allows websites to remember a user's identity in between multiple sessions. Spring Security provides a couple of implementations (hashed-token-based and persistent-token-based) that make this easy.
  • Cross Site Request Forgery (CSRF): This is a very common security exploit employed by hackers to do unethical operations, whereby unauthorized commands are sent...

Summary

This chapter aimed at introducing two important security concepts, namely authentication and authorization, and how they are supported by Spring Security.

We started by explaining these concepts in detail and then dived into them with the help of a sample application. We have used Spring MVC application as a base to help you understand Spring Security concepts. Chapter 4, Authentication Using CAS and JAAS, is aimed at explaining reactive web application framework, Spring WebFlux.

In the next chapter, we will go through other authentication mechanisms supported by Spring Security by extending the example that we have built in this chapter.

As a security professional and Spring developer, I am happy to recommend this technical handbook to anyone exploring software engineering frameworks to add security, authentication, and authorization to Spring apps. The emphasis of the book is on "reactive" apps (using Spring Reactor as main example), but the book brings value also to readers working on traditional "blocking" architectures. First of all, the organization of the book is quite smart. Every chapter has a clear goal, and this allows to jump back and forth easily depending on your goals. If the reader is new to Spring 5 and its security architecture, the first part of the book will be very useful to understand the standard authentication and authorization engine powering Spring Security. You can find a good overview of asynchronous web apps, as well. For more advanced readers, the second part of the book covers in detail the five or six main approaches to securing Spring applications: this section will help selecting a particular strategy, and once the approach has been selected, to implement it. In the last few chapters, I really liked the overview of security vendors that the reader can use as starting point to complete a secure architecture. Lastly, I really appreciate that the book has easy to follow examples based on basic Spring Boot blueprints.

I could forgive the low quality of the prose (although you have to consider that the publisher should have caught many of the errors with even a cursory look), but the truth is that this book has almost no useful information in it. Brief explanations of the technologies in question offer less than the relevant wiki pages. The code samples are trivial and poorly explained. I suggest the free Spring documentation on the web is likely to be more useful.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

I am a Packt subscriber, do I get Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Yes, all Early Access content is fully available through your subscription. You will need to have a paid for or active trial subscription in order to access all titles.

How is Early Access delivered? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Early Access is currently only available as a PDF or through our online reader. As we make changes or add new chapters, the files in your Packt account will be updated so you can download them again or view them online immediately.

How do I buy Early Access content? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Early Access is a way of us getting our content to you quicker, but the method of buying the Early Access course is still the same. Just find the course you want to buy, go through the check-out steps, and you’ll get a confirmation email from us with information and a link to the relevant Early Access courses.
