Enterprise Cloud Security and Governance

Defense in Depth Approach

The security mechanisms that a security engineer may apply really depend on the threats, criticality of data, and associated risks. If your financial transaction data are in files (papers), then the concentration should be more on the physical security of the room where these financial files are placed.

We have to understand where exactly the data lies, the criticality of this data, and the associated risks. This is one of the reasons why security tools and strategies differ across organizations.

Some organizations that deal or store sensitive data such as credit/debit cards need to follow very stringent security standards that will further be evaluated as a part of a compliance audit by an external auditor.

In this book, we assume that your environment is in the cloud and the data or the process that is being stored is important for the business of the...

The CIA triad

CIA stands for confidentiality, integrity, and availability. It helps in guiding the policies and practices of information security in an organization. Ideally, the Defense in Depth approach covers all of the three aspects of CIA triad. Let's go ahead and understand each of them.

Confidentiality

As the name suggests, this function deals with keeping information confidential.

Thus, it is directly related to the principle of least privilege. This principle states that access to the information should be granted only on a need-to-know basis with a valid business requirement and thus should not be accessible to everyone.

For example, if a developer wants to see the application logs on the server, there is no...

Introducing Defense in Depth

In information security, Defense in Depth is a collaborative use of multiple security countermeasures to protect an enterprise against targeted attacks. We can define targeted attacks, as attacks that are against the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of a system/service.

Defense in Depth is also called the layered-based approach and ideally, each layer protects against a specific type of threat. When these layers are combined together, they act as a shield that protects against most attacks.

While we are talking about layers, let's look at some layers:

  • Firewalls
  • Antivirus
  • Intrusion prevention systems (IPS) / Intrusion detection systems (IDS)
  • Virtual private networks (VPN)
  • Vulnerability scanners
  • Multi-Factor authentication (MFA)
  • Encryption
  • Hashing
  • Web application firewall
  • Authentication and authorization
  • Demilitarized zones (DMZ...

Summary

In this chapter we had an overview related to cloud computing terminology along with the challenges that an organization would face when they typically move their infrastructure to cloud based environments. We also looked into how virtualization has changed of servers terminology and thus has become one of the integral part of infrastructure as a service offering. With this said, there are more and more integrations that are been done between various major providers that allows clients to move their virtual machine from one provider to another in an easy manner.

Now that we have solid foundation related to cloud computing, we can now go and focus on the implementation part in the upcoming chapters with aspect in the next chapter which is really interesting because of the fact of discussion related to topics related to IPS in cloud, firewalls (stateful and stateless) as...
