Hierarchical security is an alternative to the strict business unit and security role model. Instead of using business units and security roles, security is based on who reports to whom.
In this model, your user has read and write privileges on all records for the users who directly report to you. Your direct reports have read and write privileges for the users who report to them and you have read privileges on those users' records as well.
To summarize, with hierarchical security you have the following options:
- Read and write privileges for one level below you
- Read privileges for the levels beneath that
This is a common model for sales teams, where sales managers need to have full access to their team's data. It is even more useful where you have people working across different regions and you have to set up your business units based on geography.
