Building Bluetooth Low Energy Systems

BLE Hardware, Software, and Debugging Tools

Bluetooth Low Energy, a successor to the Classic Bluetooth, is a young technology with huge adoption rate and big market. The technology made itself visible in mid 2010; when big manufacturers like Apple launched their products in the market with Bluetooth Low Energy support. Not only this, but Bluetooth version 4.0 took care of the biggest dilemma of the previous decade. It now consumed less power as compare to its predecessor. Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), the developers and maintainers of Bluetooth technology, made sure that the technology matched the trend of the market and helped to spread itself in the Internet of Things (IoT). Chapter 1, BLE and the Internet of Things, described the context of Bluetooth Low Energy in the world of the Internet of Things and how it got popular amongst the manufacturer as a cheap short-distance communication technology. This...

Bluetooth Low Energy hardware

Classic Bluetooth was famous for its short distance connectivity in a cellular phone. This communication was a breakthrough over conventional IR communication as it did not require line-of-sight communication. The result was marvelous. It got famous among the cellular phone users and almost every vendor started to support Classic Bluetooth. The idea of the Bluetooth was simple enough for any lay person. You did not require any technical knowledge in order to send files and pictures to someone else's device. All you need to do is to enter the same passcode on two devices before pairing them.

It is not untrue to say that the success of Classic Bluetooth was marked by cellular industry. Users of Bluetooth did not require any additional Bluetooth hardware, rather their personal phones contained the built-in facility to connect to another Bluetooth device. Before the concept of Bluetooth...

Bluetooth Low Energy software

Just like hardware, the development of Bluetooth Low Energy heavily relies on the software stack. Many software tools are available online for the development, testing and debugging of the BLE devices. Since Bluetooth Low Energy is heavily in correlation of the cellular phones, almost every major platform has its share in Bluetooth Low Energy software stack. PC industry is also very crucial in Bluetooth Low Energy software stack. In this section, we will emphasize more on the software/applications available on Microsoft Windows, Android and iOS.

Bluetooth Developer Studio by Special Interest Group

At this point of the book, we will talk about the software tools available for the development of Bluetooth Low Energy Applications. Special...

Summary

The focus of this chapter was to give readers an idea about the hardware and software tools available for the development. It described some examples of the Bluetooth hardware available for development including Nordic nRF51 development kit (with soft-devices), Adafruit Bluefruit BLE development kit and Coin Arduino BLE kit. In the software category, the chapter discussed Bluetooth Developer Studio by SIG, Nordic Semiconductor tools like nRF Connect, nRF Logger, nRF Beacon for Eddystone, nRF BLE Joiner and nRF UART 2.0. The chapter concluded itself with the introduction of two beacon applications by Google. Google Beacon Tools and Google physical web which are used in the Internet of Things applications. The chapter emphasized on the technical specifications and the uses of these tools rather than the explanation of the functionality. You will learn how to use these tools to their best in the coming chapters...

Description

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a Wireless Personal Area network technology aimed at novel applications for smart devices. High-tech BLE profiles and services are being increasingly used by application developers and hardware enthusiasts to allow devices to interact with the surrounding world. This book will focus on a technical introduction to BLE and how it is reshaping small-distance communication. We will start with IoT, where many technologies such as BLE, Zigbee, and IEEE 802.15.4 Mesh will be introduced. The book will present BLE from an engineering perspective, from which the protocol stack, architecture, and layers are discussed. You will learn to implement customized projects for Peripheral/Central communication, BLE Beacons, indoor navigation using triangulation, and the Internet gateway for Bluetooth Low Energy Personal Network, all using various code samples and APIs on Android, iOS, and the Web. Finally, the book will conclude with a glimpse into future technologies destined to be prominent in years to come.

Who is this book for?

The book is for developers and enthusiasts who are passionate about learning Bluetooth Low Energy technologies and want to add new features and services to their new or existing products. They should be familiar with programming languages such as Swift, Java, and JavaScript. Knowledge of debugging skills would be an advantage.

What you will learn

  • Bluetooth Low Energy in theory.
  • Bluetooth Low Energy Hardware and Software Development Kits.
  • Implement Bluetooth low energy communication (central and peripheral) using Android.
  • Master BLE Beacons with examples implemented over Eddystone and iBeacons.
  • Implement indoor navigation using Estimote Beacons on iOS.
  • Implement Internet gateways to control BLE devices on a Wi-Fi network.
  • Understand BLE security mechanisms with a special focus on Bluetooth pairing, bonding, and key exchange to cover encryption, privacy, and user data integrity.
  • Implement Bluetooth Mesh using CSRMesh Technology.

Unfortunately a single review complaining about software not running on Raspberry Pi (a common problem with changing hardware and software revisions) hurts the perception about the book. The author gives an introduction to the bluetooth technology and guides the user how to build systems. In my case it is android and by the look of it, he gives enough API details to get started (comparable or more than what I found in similar books).

I bought this book directly from Packt.I tried the example for BLE gateway with RPi and it doesn't even start. More, the downloaded code does not match with the description in the book, there are different directories. Very poor written. Waste of money!

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter.
