Training and skill sets – they matter
When I onboard a new SRE or DevOps engineer, I allow at least a 6-month ramp-up for them to learn the company’s architecture, policies, people, and business. Can that time be faster? Certainly, even with a skill set in every tool used, training will still be needed for custom build architectures, deployment pipelines, and understanding of authentication systems, just to name a few. It’s expensive to hire an SRE or DevOps engineer when you think of the time invested in training; I estimate it costs at least $50,000 to onboard an engineer in the United States market.
With this being said, identifying gaps and training opportunities quickly can allow the gaps to be addressed efficiently to ensure the best possible remediations.
