Python Robotics Projects

Using GPIOs as Input

In the previous chapter, we understood how GPIOs are used for output. But, as the name suggests, the GPIO can be used for both input and output purposes. In this chapter, we will see how you can go ahead and use these pins to input the data over to Raspberry Pi.

The topics which we will cover in this chapter are:

  • A deeper dive into GPIOs
  • Interfacing the PIR sensor
  • Interfacing the ultrasonic proximity sensor
  • Interfacing through I2C

A deeper dive into GPIOs

I am sure you remember this line of code from the previous chapter:

GPIO.setup(18,GPIO.OUT)

As explained earlier, this basically tells us how GPIO the pin will behave in a certain program. By now, you must have guessed that by changing this single line of code we can change the behavior of the pin and convert it from output to input. This is how you would do it:

GPIO.setup(18,GPIO.IN)

Once you write this line of code in your program, the microcontroller will know that during the time that the program is being run, the pin number 18 will only be used for input purposes.

To understand how this would actually work, let's head back to our hardware and see how it can be done. Firstly, you need to connect an LED to any of the pins; we will be using pin number 23 in this program. Secondly, you need to connect a switch on pin number 24. You can refer...

Interfacing through I2C

So far, so good. Electronic circuits can be very interesting and, while they seem very complex, often we find that the working can be very simple. In the previous section, we interfaced one sensor at a time. We can go ahead and interface multiple sensors, but we are limited by the number of GPIOs that are present. We have also seen that some sensors such as ultrasonic sensors may use more than one GPIO pin for their working. This further reduces the number of sensors that we can interface with the microcontroller. Once we move on to more complex circuits, we will also realize that the wiring can be really messy and if a problem occurs then finding what's wrong becomes one tedious task.

Now, there is an even bigger problem that we face while designing robotic systems and that's the problem of timing—all the work done in a system has to be...

Summary

This chapter was all about interfacing sensors with GPIOs so that the data can be retrieved by sensors. Moving forward, in the next chapter, with the help of these learned topics, we will learn how to make a pet-feeding robot.

Key benefits

  • • Design, build, and stimulate collaborative robots
  • • Build high-end robotics projects such as a customized personal Jarvis
  • • Leverage the power of Python and ROS for DIY robotic projects

Description

Robotics is a fast-growing industry. Multiple surveys state that investment in the field has increased tenfold in the last 6 years, and is set to become a $100-billion sector by 2020. Robots are prevalent throughout all industries, and they are all set to be a part of our domestic lives. This book starts with the installation and basic steps in configuring a robotic controller. You'll then move on to setting up your environment to use Python with the robotic controller. You'll dive deep into building simple robotic projects, such as a pet-feeding robot, and more complicated projects, such as machine learning enabled home automation system (Jarvis), vision processing based robots and a self-driven robotic vehicle using Python. By the end of this book, you'll know how to build smart robots using Python.

Who is this book for?

If building robots is your dream, then this book is made for you. Prior knowledge of Python would be an added advantage.

What you will learn

  • • Get to know the basics of robotics and its functions
  • • Walk through interface components with microcontrollers
  • • Integrate robotics with the IoT environment
  • • Build projects using machine learning
  • • Implement path planning and vision processing
  • • Interface your robots with Bluetooth

The two first sets of code the book has you write both either result in errors or flat out just don't do what they are intended to do. Doesn't matter if you copy them verbatim from the text. They won't work unless you change them yourselves. The writer tells you to use Broadcom(BCM) in the first code and then changes it to (BOARD) in the next code. The second code doesn't work unless you use BCM, and even then the loop never ends. The text also fails to show the appropriate indent after the range(3): line. The first code wouldn't work because GPIO.out(23.....) needed to be GPIO.ouput(23......), which oddly enough, I figured out because he started using it in the second code. Heck, by the time you make it to the third code, he uses both OUT and OUTPUT. Seriously, do yourself a favor and avoid this absolute train wreck of a book. PackT might want to hire and editor and start some quality control.

Projects are rarely cancelled, but sometimes it's unavoidable. If an Early Access course is cancelled or excessively delayed, you can exchange your purchase for another course. For further details, please contact us here.

Where can I send feedback about an Early Access title? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

If you have any feedback about the product you're reading, or Early Access in general, then please fill out a contact form here and we'll make sure the feedback gets to the right team.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

I am a Packt subscriber, do I get Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Yes, all Early Access content is fully available through your subscription. You will need to have a paid for or active trial subscription in order to access all titles.

How is Early Access delivered? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Early Access is currently only available as a PDF or through our online reader. As we make changes or add new chapters, the files in your Packt account will be updated so you can download them again or view them online immediately.

How do I buy Early Access content? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Early Access is a way of us getting our content to you quicker, but the method of buying the Early Access course is still the same. Just find the course you want to buy, go through the check-out steps, and you’ll get a confirmation email from us with information and a link to the relevant Early Access courses.

What is Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published.
