Chapter 6. Handling Exchange Server Roles

Five different server roles were introduced with the release of Exchange 2007 and 2010. These were Mailbox, Client Access, Hub Transport, Edge Transport, and Unified messaging role. They were introduced to optimize the use of system resources that were available at that time. Later, this was reduced to just Mailbox, Client Access, and Edge Transport in Exchange 2013. With the release of Exchange 2016, we just have two roles: Mailbox and Edge Transport.

In this chapter, we will configure the Client Access Services, such as POP, IMAP, Outlook Anywhere, and ActiveSync and different transport components. At the end, we will review the usage and configuration of Public folder mailboxes as a part of the Mailbox server role.
