Assessing existing physical and virtual desktop environments
Before we can look at the components of AVD, we need to understand the current environment, the requirements, and other information that would be useful.
Assessing AVD deployments
When designing AVD, we must first examine the current desktop estate within the organization. The desktop estate could be purely physical, virtual, or a mixture of both physical and virtual. Suppose your organization is deploying a virtual desktop environment for the first time (greenfield deployment). In this case, you should still assess your physical desktop estate to understand the applications, data, and profile usage within your organization.
The desktop assessment should evaluate areas including user persona, consistent host pool types of virtual machines (VMs), applications, and user profiles. The data gathered from this assessment can be used to plan the deployment of new infrastructure and to guide the AVD migration process.
