John Farrar is a man who has a passion for pragmatic technology. He started working on computers in the late 70s and has watched the trends as closely as he watches the milestones. His work included programming on early computers, repairing military flight simulators in the navy, and working on web technology that helps people get business done. This work included building early commerce solutions for Apple, Brunswick Recreation, and Casio and working for a number of other companies along the letters of the alphabet. He is inspired and passionate about understanding the need before choosing the technology that answers the challenge. Over the years, John has worked on a couple of books for ColdFusion, multiple open source projects from early Fusebox, community participation with jQuery, and some frameworks he created on his own. He has spoken at about a dozen conferences over the years and worked on supporting local and online users as time has permitted. He has provided technical training from online courses, in person class instructions, and a number of great intern programmers that let him share their entrance into the world of writing software.

Chapter 8. CF AJAX User Interface

AJAX is a term that has changed the face of the Web. The topics in this chapter are enough to drive the upgrade or purchase of ColdFusion repeatedly. The power of the functions helps developers and site owners in a number of ways that prove worthy of this version holding the AJAX label.

In this chapter, we will find out what makes AJAX different from HTML and regular server-oriented web pages. We will also look at how ColdFusion interacts with AJAX in order to assist us with layout, menus, toolbars, and form features. This helps us conclude that ColdFusion has made our applications easier. In this chapter, we will cover the following:

  • Comparing HTML, server, and browser technology sites

  • ColdFusion AJAX layout features

  • ColdFusion widgets (dynamic divs, menus, panels, tool tips, windows)

John started working with computer programming around 1977. He has had the opportunity to work on projects used by Apple, Blue Cross, Brunswick Recreation, Casio, GVSU, Johnson Controls, Sprint, and many others. This history covers over 30 years of knowledge and experience in the industry. He started doing web development over 10 years ago. In the early days of the Web ColdFusion stood out to him not just as a way to make web pages into web applications but as a maturing solid platform good for the developer, site owner, and end users. He started at version 4.5 and has been enjoying each version upgrade more and more. John owns a company called SOSensible. His company does work for large companies but has a special focus on also making sure technology is approachable beyond the enterprise. They have developed a number of Open Source solutions including COOP. COOP is a mix of Custom Tags and CFCs that provides structure while keeping development simpler. It demonstrates his love for the things that make ColdFusion/CFML a delightful language to build websites. He has spoken at national and regional conferences, online meetings, and area user group meetings. He is also an Adobe User Group manager. John knows that community is a viable and productive tool to build developers and the companies they serve. He has learned much from great resources in the community including bloggers, books, conferences, and resources to great in number to mention here.
