As you know, the router is a networking device that connects the networks, while routing is the algorithm that enables the router to select the best path to forward packets to the remote network. The fact that the router connects the networks means that there are not as many ports as there are in switches. Also, the process of determining the best path is based on the routing table, which represents a routing database in which the routes to particular network destinations are stored. So, going back to the word educates (mentioned right at the beginning of this chapter), it is the routing mechanism that educates the router to select the best route for packet delivery to a destination.
