The Foundation of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence

In this book, I invite you to go on a journey with me to discover how to add Artificial Intelligence (AI) to a mobile robot. The basic difference between what I will call an AI robot and a more regular robot is the ability of the robot and its software to make decisions and to learn and adapt to its environment based on data from its sensors. To be a bit more specific, we are leaving the world of pre-coded robot design behind. Instead of programming all of the robot’s behaviors in advance, the robot, or more correctly, the robot software, will learn from examples we provide, or from interacting with the outside world. The robot software will not control its behavior as much as the data that we use to train the AI system will.

The AI robot will use its learning process to make predictions about the environment and how to achieve goals, and then use those predictions to create behavior. We will be trying out several forms of AI on our journey, including supervised and unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning, neural networks, and genetic algorithms. We will create a digital robot assistant that can talk and understand commands (and tell jokes), and we will create an Artificial Personality (AP) for our robot. We will learn how to teach our robot to navigate without a map, grasp objects by trial and error, and see in three dimensions.

In this chapter, we will cover the following key topics:

The book is really well written and it explain the concept into a really compressible way that is not complicated at all.I’m half way through and I really find it interesting.Looking forward to start coding. I think is an excellent way to learn easily different topics of ml that can sometime be boring or difficult to digest.There has been an initial delay from the author of sharing the list of hardware needed if you want to replicate the whole project for real, that is now sorted.Fantastic book no doubts about it!

The book takes on the task of introducing AI techniques for programming a mobile robot. The chapters progressively cover AI-generated perception, navigation, and human-computer interaction tasks. This is distinctly different than the usual command and control paradigm used by most introductory robotics guides. The concepts are covered in a thorough and compelling manner with the intermediate student or hobbyist in mind. However, the reader should be aware that the example code is not consistently in ROS2. Some code is transferred from the first edition of the book and is in ROS1 and Python 2. The code will require a rewrite to ROS2. Something the intermediate student should be able to accomplish. Although individual tasks are complete as written, some additional code will need to be written to produce a fully functional robot. These deficiencies could be easily corrected with some additional example code on the GitHub repository.

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.
