Future of serverless

One trend that we see in terms of FaaS is support for more and more programming languages. There are more runtime supports than ever, and the trend will continue. Many of these serverless trends—as in other cloud services—are set by AWS, so it would be fair to assume some of the recent developments in AWS Lambda will be followed by other vendors as well.

Trends in serverless

There are new use cases and technologies that are shifting to a serverless model. Here is a list of trends in serverless—while this is not a comprehensive list, it is a speculation based on how various vendors are moving in the serverless space:

  • Ability to use custom containers—FaaS platforms in general offer packaging of functions and their dependencies, while the underlying runtime and container image remain the same. Customers have no ability to influence the container and runtime. This has changed for Lambda and will change for other platforms...
